Tumbl'd Entertainment News for the Week of 2/19

Each week the entertainment world is flooded with news. Big news, little news, inconsequential news, and funny news. It flies around the web at breakneck pace and no matter wear you turn, no matter what entertainment site you go to, it all looks the same. Sure, the opinion may be different, but the core piece of information is the same.

Now, I would love to get in on the fun, but I barely have time to read it, much less write it. So, I try to do the next best thing, I send some of the more interesting (to me) stories out across the web on the Critical Outcast Tumblr blog and then, at the end of the week, gather them together and add some of my own thoughts. Hopefully, you will find this interesting, entertaining, and maybe even worthwhile!

The Last Airbender - Trailer
I am surprised by how good this looks. I am completely unfamiliar with the show, but must admit to being a little excited about the film. Could M. Night Shyamalan be back on track?

Riddick Sequel in the Works
It is official, there will be another Riddick film and both writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway) and Vin Diesel are back onboard. Talk is that the film will be more in the vein of Pitch Black than The Chronicles of Riddick. Whatever the case, I am in.

Zombieland the TV Show
Originally conceived as a television show, the show nver got off the ground and migrated to the big screen. Even while the sequel is being planned, in 3D no less, there are still ideas kicking to take the story to the small screen. Could be interesting. What do you think?

Roland Emmerich Developing Asimov's Foundation
This has me worried. I love the Foundation stories, but I worry what Emmerich may turn them into. I mean, he is known for the visual pyrotechnics but not so much for the story. If there is a series that needs a delicate touch, it is this one. I am hoping for the best while expecting the worst.

Season of the Witch (2010?) Pulled from the Schedule
Despite the advertising campaign that was already underway, the Nicolas Cage film has been pulled from the schedule and is now without a release date. The film set during the Crusades is one I was actually looking forward to. I wonder how long I will have to wait?

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever - Bloody Clip
I cannot believe this will be good, but this clip looks like fun.

Suicide Girls Must Die - Trailer
I cannot say this looks like a good idea, but I do like the Suicide Girls! This is a horror film that s also a reality film with no script and the girls are not in on it. I am sure I'll see it at some point.

Gomorrah - "Excrement"
Latest video for the metal act. Not bad.

Gomorah from Scott Hansen on Vimeo.

Cyrus - Trailer
This is going to be fun. Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly in a battle of wits. Who will win?

Get Him to the Greek - Trailer
If one Jonah Hill film isn't enough, here is another. This time he is paired with Russell Brand in a spin off of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. So, we know Brand is the same character, is Hill the same character?

Defendor - Trailer
Woody Harrelson takes up the mantle of a superhero with the film's title. This looks good, but is it to close to Kick Ass?

ECW Shuts Down
For the second time the ECW brand is being shuttered. The first time was when they went under and WWE bought them and now as an extension of WWE. With it closing, a new reality show called NXT will take its place.

Chris Pine for Captain America?
Pines is the latest name to be mentioned in conjunction with the role. I say why not? I think he has the right look and could pull the role off. If Robert Downey Jr can be Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, why cant Pine be Cap and Kirk?

Portnoy and Avenged Sevenfold
A7X was left devastated following the death of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan in late December. The band is now getting ready to hit the studio and have asked Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy to sit in for the album sessions. This could be an interesting mix pending fulltime replacement. Portnoy is a very good drummer.

I Spit on Your Grave Could See the Big Screen
Anchor Bay picked up distribution rights for the remake of the 1978 film and have signaled intentions to release it on the big screen. I wonder how it is? I cannot imagine it will be as good as the Last House on the Left remake.

Carla Gugino Joins Faster
Following the departure of Salma Hayek from the Dwayne Johnson starring thriller questions arose as to who would step in. The question has been answered.

A Movie is Set to be Based on Erector Sets
What can be said? If this gets made it is bound to be  disaster.

Tekken - Trailer
Can this be worse than Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li? The trailer looks downright awful.

The Wolfman  is a New Moon Rip Off
Let's end the week with a little comedy, just check out the column. It says it better than I ever could.

Tumbl'd Entertainment News for the Week of 2/12

SyFy to Air Merlin
Last Spring NBC aired the first season of the BBC Merlin series. The series focuses on Merlin as a teenager just learning about magic and his budding relationships with those of the Arthurian legend. It seems that SyFy has obtained the rights and will re-air the first season before moving forward with future seasons. I enjoy the show and look forward to the second season.

Blind Death - Trailer
This is a zombie movie from Chile. The trailer is more talk than anything else, but I am definitely interested. It centers on a mining accident and how the government blocked off the area and turned their back on the people there. Does not sound all that original, but I still want to see it.

Lost Really is Ending as Stars Look for Work
Daniel Dae Kim is lining up work now that Lost is finally going to become a closed chapter. It does look like he wants to stay in Hawaii, though. He is signing up for a role in the new remake of Hawaii Five-O. Not sure we need it, but sure, why not.

Ghostbusters 3D is Real and Bill Murray is Onboard!
This was one of the sticking points for the movie, whether or not its biggest star would appear in it. Well, he is appearing in it, but it is not without conditions. Those conditions are in the link, but I warn you it involves plot points, so if you don't want to be spoiled, don't click!

Saw VII Begins Principal Photography
Now this should be interesting. Kevin Greutert (Saw VI) is back in the director's chair despite his strong desire not to be there. He was forced back in at the last minute and tired to make changes to the script and improve it, but his team had very little time as the sets had already been built and the schedule already made. The 3D entry has begun shooting and it is just a matter of time to see how this turns out. I do not have much hope for it.

The Thing Sequel/Prequel Signs Cast Members
I am still not sure where this one fits with John Carpenter's film. I suspect it is a prequel set on the Norwegian base that originally encountered the alien. In any case, the project is moving forward and two cast members have been signed, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. Hopefully this turns out well.

The Last Airbender - Trailer
This actually looks pretty good. Could this be M. Night Shyamalan's journey back? Could we be seeing him display the talent again that we know he has? I don't know, but one can hope.

Cop Out - Trailer
This new trailer for the Kevin Smith movie gets much closer to the heart of the matter without giving away the plot. This actually feels like a Smith movie whereas the first one did not at all. There is still hope!

Dave Ellefson Reunites with Megadeth
Back where he belongs, Dave has reunited with the band he helped found with Dave Mustaine. He joins drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick as they prepare for the 20th Anniversary tour for Rust in Peace, the classic Megadeth album. I wish this tour was coming by me....

Clash of the Titans - Poster
This new poster reflects the last minute change for 3D as well as the pushed back (by one week) release date.

Rock on the Range 2010 Line-up Announced
Too bad this not within my travelo distance, the line-up looks great.
"...Godsmack, Rob Zombie, Limp Bizkit, Three Days Grace, Slash, Seether, Rise Against, Deftones, Papa Roach, Theory Of A Deadman, Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Coheed & Cambria, Bullet for My Valentine, Puddle Of Mudd, Five Finger Death Punch, Apocalyptica, Drowning Pool, Halestorm, Sevendust, Skillet, Mushroomhead, Helmet, Airbourne, Anberlin, Cold, Nonpoint, 2Cents, Adelitas Way, Shaman’s Harvest, Year Long Disaster, Like A Storm, Taddy Porter, Janus, Columbus’ own Noise Auction and more."

Zombieland 2 in 3D... of course...
I am very glad to hear we will be taking another journey into the post-apocalyptic comedy land. This movie was a blast and I sincerely hope they can bring the magic again. 3D actually makes sense, so I am on board for that. Here is to hoping for the best!

Tom Cruise is Onboard for M:I 4
I really enjoyed the JJ Abrams directed third film. This one is set to be based on an original idea developed by Cruise and Abrams. Will Abrams direct again? I do not know, but I suspect he will at least be involved as a producer.

Christopher Nolan and Superman and Batman
Nolan certainly has his hands full working with Warner Brothers. After giving Batman an incredible makeover with a pair of films, he gave them first crack at his new film Inception, and now he is tapped to mentor a new Superman project while also getting a third Batman film underway. Frankly, I am very pleased with these developments. Aren't you?

The Hughes Brothers Lined up to Direct Akira
A live action Akira seems like a project doomed to fail. I have to admit that I am definitely curious to see if it can be pulled off. As for this news, I think these two could be the right ones for the job. The Book of Eli was a surprisingly good film that had surprising depth and a dynamic look. I think they could translate their style well to this project. Time will tell if it happens.

Turn the Beat Around - Trailer
Gloria Estefan biopic? Nope. Looks like another dance film and considerably more boring.

Killers - Tailer
Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl star in Knight & Day's little brother. It looks like fun, but forgettable.

Vacation Reboot?
The last time we saw the Griswolds it was an ill advised television sequel to the memorable Christmas Vacation. The last time we saw Chevy Chase in the role was the lackluster Vegas Vacation. Now we could be getting a reboot that plays more like a sequel. It will focus on a grown up Rusty taking his family on vacation. I don't know about you, but I'm down for a shot.

Get Ready for Titanic 2
Yes, you read that right. The delightful studio Asylum is planning in giving us a new journey of a new ship. Anyone want to predict how it ends?

Toy Story 3 - Teaser
I am really looking forward to this movie. Frankly, if it says Pixar I am there.

Tumbl'd Entertainment News For the Week of Feb. 5

Mad in Italy - Trailer
Slasher film coming out of Italy. It looks like a low budget affair, but it looks pretty good too!

Miramax - Shuttered
It is a sad day for independent cinema as one of its champions has been closed down. It is the next in a line of studio closures as the big studios are closing their vanity labels. We all saw this coming. The warning signs appeared not long ago when Disney announced it would be folding its offices back in with the main Disney office, of course this was seen as the polite way to go as a few films were/are still on the schedule. This closing also leaves a number of films in limbo, locked behind Miramax's locked doors.

Ip Man 2 - Teaser Trailer
I really need to see the first film. These movies tell the story of Ip Man, one of Bruce Lee's teachers. Donnie Yen (Blade: Trinity, Iron Monkey) as the titular character. This teaser hints at a fight between Yen and Sammo Hung!

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - trailer
Do we really need this? I wonder how willing people will be to see a movie about Wall Street. It does see Michael Douglas return as Gordon Gecko with a new upstart at his side in Shia Lebeouf. It also features Oliver Stone in the director's chair.

The Planned Muppet Movie Gets a Director
James Bobin, co-creator of Flight of the Conchords has been signed on to direct an update for the Muppets. I understand it is not a reboot or a reimagining, but a new modern-set Muppet movie. I could get behind this, I was always a fan as a kid. It is also possible that Bobin could be directing from a script by Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Nicholas Stoller (director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall). This could prove interesting.

Frozen - TV Spot
I am looking forward to this. Initially it sounds like a silly concept, but I think the execution could prove it a winning feature.

Scout Compton and Halloween 3
Scout Compton, who starred as Laurie Strode in the two Rob Zombie directed features, is caught on a webcam talking about a proposed third film.

Ong Bak 3 - Teaser Trailer
They are not wasting any time, are they? The second film has barely hit store shelves!

In the Mouth of Ubaldo Terzani - Trailer
This looks downright odd. Italian horror film that promises some good bloodshed.

Birdemic - Backstory
Last week I gave yo the epic trailer, now learn a little bit about the story behind the movie.

Severin Acquires All-Rights To "BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR" from Severin Films on Vimeo.

Kate Beckinsale in for Fourth Underworld
The fourth entry in the vampires and werewolves series is slated to be produced in 3D, and I have heard rumblings it may be set in space. Aside from that, Beckinsale is in although she does not really want to do it, despite talk that her husband Len Wiseman would be returning to the director's chair.

Lakeshore Developing I, Frankenstein
This looks like it may be an interesting, but at the same time it could prove to be terrible. The story finds the legendary monster protecting humanity from supernatural creatures. It is being developed under the watchful eye of the Underworld producers. Let's just say I won't be holding my breath.

Olivia Wilde Joins Cowboys and Aliens
The House beauty is set to join Daniel Craig, who replace Robert Downey Jr., in this comedic science fiction western for director Jon Favreau. I know little about the project, but I like the small sample of talent involved thus far.

The Bourne Prequel?
A recent interview with Matt Damon revealed that the next Bourne relate project will likely be a sequel with a new cast and crew. We also learn that it would be in theaters before he suits up again. Not sure how I feel about this. I want to say, we have three strong films, if it is without Damon, I a not interested.

The Losers - Trailer
This looks like a lot of fun. An elite military group is betrayed and they have to get to the bottom of it. It looks to have explosive action and a good sense of humor.

A.D. - Trailer
CG zombie film! Look pretty cool, even if it is a small bit.

Transformers 3.... D?
Frankly, I am surprised the idea took this long to come up. Paramount is thinking about shooting Michael Bays third robot flick and leaving the fighting to the robots. I don't really care one way or the other. This just seems to be a studio looking at a potentially bloated bottom line.

Kick-Ass - International Trailer
I am really looking forward to this movie.
<a href="http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-GB&amp;from=sp&amp;vid=df8e1600-9d67-47ce-9b2b-6171d203b64d" target="_new" title="Kick-Ass - Trailer">Video: Kick-Ass - Trailer</a>

Enchanted To Ge a Sequel
A couple of years ago, Disney released this simply wonderful princess come to life story and now they are working up a sequel to it. Does it need one? Probably not. Still, I will surely be there, I only hope the quality is there.

Captain America to begin Shooting in June
The only problem is that they don't have a cast! They say they have some names lined up. I wonder. Who will play Cap? I kind of hope they find an unknown.

Fast and Furious getting a Sequel
It was originally intended to be the final of the series, but making a lot of money can change people's minds really fast. The new film will bring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker back and on the run with all the souped up cars you've come to expect. This slice of beauty is to be called Fast Five. Yuck.

Tumbl'd Entertainment News For the Week of 1/29

Conan Has Been Cast!
Guess what? Conan will now be played by none other than Jay Leno! Yes, you read that right! Aw, I kid, I kid. This is the announcement for the new Conan film that is getting ramped up. The role has been awarded to Jason Momoa. I can hear you all say "Who?" Jason Momoa is best known for his roles on Baywatch: Hawaii and Stargate: Atlantis. Does he have what it takes to lead Conan to new heights? I'm not sure, but am willing to give it a shot.

Ghostbusters.... 3D!
3D is starting to really heat up. Hollywood is going to have to start helping theaters get these projectors, as the penetration is still pretty low. Before long the theaters will not be able to support them. As for this project, I think it is a good idea. The thought of ghosts flying all over the theater is an attractive one. I kind of want to see this now.

Birdemic Trailer
There is really nothing I can say about this other that it is going to be epic!

Saw VI has an added scene on DVD
It is not much, really, but I found it interesting and I assume it is going to have implications on the seventh film.

100 Cheesiest Movie Lines.
This is not exactly news, but somebody did put a lot of effort into editing these clips together. While I do not agree that they are all cheesy, I do think it is very well done and fun to watch.

Lost Season Six Promo
I am looking forward to this season if only to see if they can wrap it up. On the other hand, I am also kind of glad it will just be over.

The Runaways Gets a Teaser Poster
I am looking forward to this.

Repo Men gets a Poster
I still cannot help but think of Repo! The Genetic Opera. Still, this poster is kind of cool, although it does remind me of something.

Fox Acquires Machete
This could prove to be very interesting. It began life as a fake trailer for the Grindhouse double feature and now it has been turned into a feature. I am really looking forward to it, I mean no one can play a bad ass like Danny Trejo. I have seen no footage, but I suspect it will be cool. However, this pick up also comes with a response from the formerly interested Weinstein Company that amounts to: it's not a good movie, good luck with that.

Ryan Reynolds Gets Buried
Lionsgate has picked up this thriller and I am very much intrigued by the concept. In it, Reynolds plays a contractor in Iraq who wakes up to find himself buried. All he has is a lighter and a cell phone. Interesting, no? Sounds awfully claustrophobia. I also know that Stephen Tobolowsky is the voice on the phone.

Hot Tub Time Machine - trailer
This one can easily go one of two ways. I hope it leans towards great.

The Dead - trailer
This zombie film out of Africa looks pretty good. Some of it is standard zombie fare, but some of it looks like it is right out of a Lucio Fulci film.

Lionsgate takes a shot at Paranormal Activity 2
This could get ugly and I have no doubt the movies will suffer for it. I previously informed you that Saw VI director Kevin Greutert had signed to direct the Paranormal sequel, which was also slated to open directly opposite Saw VII. Well, Lionsgate has put a stop to that by invoking a contractual clause that is forcing Greutert to direct VII. Let's just say he is not happy.

How I Met Your Mother Gets a Sixth Season
Yeah! This makes me happy. It always seems like this show is on the bubble, it is nice to see the early pickup for a favorite of mine. Pair it up with Big Bang Theory and you have a formidable Monday night set of comedies!

Tim Burton Heads up Cannes Jury
I like Burton. He always makes interesting films that make me love cinema. Of course, this announcement has people making cracks about the winning movie has already been chosen and it is about an outsider with big eyes. Funny, sure, but always remember that Burton marches to his own drummer. Sure, his style is recognizable, but it is a great one.

Mortal Kombat Reboot?
There are some rumors floating around that a reboot is in the works. I think it could be a lot of fun, but I am not sure how I feel about this. Do I really want to see it? I still like the original one. Better yet, do you want to see it?

AC/DC to Provide Iron Man 2 Soundtrack
The album will contain hits spanning their entire career. The first video is "Shoot to Thrill."

Clash of the Titans is Indeed Going 3D
The tests must have gone well and it will only delay the release by one week. I cannot say I am a fan of this. If you wanted 3D, it should have been shot that way from the start.

Guy Ritchie to Helm Sherlock 2
It sees only natural. The movie was a blast and is a Golden Globe winner and a box office success. To help move this along, he has left the Lobo project (based on the DC character). I hope that finds a new director.

Jessica Alba Leaves a Screening of Her Latest, Sparking Outrage
At a screening of Michael Winterbottom's Killer in Me Alba got up and left during a scene of graphic violence against women (being her in the film). This has sparked outrage among activist groups about the imagery in the film. I have not seen it so I cannot comment directly, but I do find it interesting that she agreed to do the movie yet can't watch it.

Tumbl'd Entertainment News For the Week of 1/22

Avatar for Haiti
This is rather cool. Instead of dropping the bucks on another screening, why not donate that money to help the disaster relief in Haiti?

Pirahna 3D has Gotten Kicked out of April
Apparently, the Dimension has gotten cold feet about releasing the horror remake this April where it would have to compete with the anticipated Kick Ass. To avert the confrontation, the studio has pulled the Alexandre Aja (Haute Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) directed film and moved it tentatively to August. The trailer had just began running and I was looking forward to it. I have heard good things from screenings that have already happened. It looks goofy, campy, and I hear it is quite bloody.

Can Mel Still Pack a Theater?
With the upcoming release of Edge of Darkness, this column questions whether or not Mel is a box office draw. It is an interesting question, as it has been some time since Gibson appeared in a film and in the meantime has had his share of controversy. On top of that, other action stars of his era are not exactly the draws they used to be, look at guys like Bruce Willis and Sly Stallone. I, too, am curious how it will turn out. I think he still has some gas in the tank and this movie ould seem to play to his strengths.

Predators Set Photos
Nimrod Antal's latest project is shooting and some stills have made it to the web. I am hoping this wipes out the Alien vs. Predator films and delivers something compelling.

Cloverfield Sequel?
This movie proved to be an incredible cinematic experience, a new take on he monster movie that breather life into the genre and opened up a new world to explore. It appears that a sequel is still a possibility according to JJ Abrams. I know I would love to take another trip into this world, I only hope it is not another "found footage" type of movie.

Paranormal Activity 2 has a Director
I am really skeptical about a sequel to this surprising hit. I loved the film. I left feeling really creeped out. The sequel is going to have to do something very different than the first to work. Kevin Greutert has signed on to direct. His last film was the surprisingly good Saw VI. I find it odd that he was not retained for the seventh in the franchise, which will be helmed by David Hackl who directed the lackluster fifth film. To make things even more interesting, the two will open head to head on October 22. I am curious to see this battle and hope that the results are a pair of good films.

The Resurrection of the Christ Coming to Theaters?
Indie producer Bill McKay is prepping a film of Jesus resurrection to hit the big screen. The film is said to include Gladiator-esque elements. I cannot see this working, but I admit to being intrigued. We will see if it actually comes to pass.

Push to be Made for Television
The superhero film, which was actualy pretty good, is being developed as a television series. I think it could work. I could see it being what Heroes should be. The movie did jus seem to get the pieces in place for a bigger story and this may be our opportunity to see that story.

Spider-Man has a Director
Marc Webb has signed on the dotted line to take on a new series for Sony. This comes after rumors that Sam Raimi was pushing for Predators director Nimrod Antal. Webb made his directorial debut with the fantastic (500) Days of Summer. Decidedly different from what you expect a superhero movie to be like. That said, he is a new voice and I look forward to what he has to offer. I just hope that he and whoever writes the script are able to do so with minimal studio interference.

Necrosis - Trailer
This low-budget horror film's trailer just debuted and while I do not think it will be great, it does look like fun. We also get to see what former pop star Tiffany has been up to.

Alice in Wonderland Featurette
The first featurette has arrived and wouldn't you know it, it focuses on Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter.

Clash of the Titans to go 3D?
The studio is thinking of making this a 3D release, but do they have enough time to meet the March release date? I think they should give the 3D a rest. I like it, but they are going a little crazy with it. Not to mention How to Train Your Dragon is slated to open in 3D on the same date.

MacGruber - Trailer
This SNL skit is terrible. Can they really be making a movie out of it? This trailer says yes.

Tumbld Entertainment News For the Week of 1/15/10

Each week the entertainment world is flooded with news. Big news, little news, inconsequential news, and funny news. It flies around the web at breakneck pace and no matter wear you turn, no matter what entertainment site you go to, it all looks the same. Sure, he opinion may be different, but the core piece of information is the same. Hopefully, you will find this interesting, entertaining, or maybe even worthwhile!

This week's dominant news? The future of Spider-Man.

The Next Bond Movie Gets a Director
Sam Mendes was announced as the director of the next Bond film. There is no other information regarding story or release dates, although I have to assume that Daniel Craig will be back. I must say that Mendes is an interesting choice. He is not an action director, although I suspect he will be fine. Mendes is very good with characters, see Away We Go, Resurrection Road, and Jarhead. So, I am going to guess that the 23rd film in the franchise will dial the action down a bit from Quantum of Solace and the character development boosted. Whatever the case, I am looking forward to it.

Spider-Man 4 Gets Delayed
This news must feel a bit old by now, considering what has come since then. Still, at the time it was pretty big to learn that Sony, Marvel, and Sam Raimi were all having issues with the direction of the franchise and the script that was being developed. I was glad that they chose to delay in the hopes of getting the script right, although I did fear that it was a ploy to get made in 3D.

Spider-Man 4 Scrapped, Reboot Planned
It did not take long for the delay to turn into a scrapping. I mean, as soon as the delay was announced, Thor jumped into its 2011 release date. What I had not expected was that a reboot would be attempted so soon. Whatever the problems there were for the fourth film must have been bad for it to escalate and change gears so fast.

Yellow Submarine to be Remade
I am not exactly a fan of the Yellow Submarine film, but I do not know how to feel about a remake. This is slated o be Robert Zemeckis' next project and yes it will be motion capture. I admit to being perhaps a little intrigued, but the idea of recasting the Beatles has got to be a daunting task.

Transformers 3 to Start Shooting in May
They are not wasting any time are they? The second film is still fresh (rotten?) in our memories and they are already gearing up to shoot the next one? Is there a script? Well, I guess they don't really need that. They could probably ad lib the scenes, piece it together in editing and still make $350 million. Sadly, I know I will be there.

Spidey Reboot to be "Gritty and Contemporary"
What exactly does that mean? I never looked at Spider-Man as being a "gritty" character, not like, say, Ghost Rider, Punisher, or Wolverine (and weren't they gritty, well, maybe Punsher). Also, isn't the current series contemporary? I question the need for another origin film with the last one being less than a decade old. On top of that, it seems the script has already underway parallel to the sequel. Why were they planning for the sequel to fail? Seems a little fishy to me.

Thor Starts Production
On the good side of comic book heroes, Thor has begun production. The Kenneth Brannagh helmed project will hopefully be a good one. I am not the most knowledgeable regarding the character, but I have hopes. We will find out in May 2011.

Sarah Palin Joins Fox News
I cannot say I have much to say about this. Although I smell ratings! I have seen clips of her interviews with Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck and that is about all I need.

Glee Gets Second Season
This series is one of the high points of the latest television season. It is well written, features good performances, is high energy, and is just a lot of fun. If you don't watch this you should, if you don't think you'd like it you may be surprised by what you find. I am very happy to see it will be coming back next season.

Peter Sarsgaard to Play Green Lantern Villain?
Sarsgaard is being lined up to face off with Ryan Reynolds in the DC hero film. It appears that Sinestro will not be the main villain, but is expected to play some role. Lantern is an interesting character I only know a little bit about the guy, but the character and his history should prove fertile ground for an epic film.

Alice in Wonderland Soundtrack Listing
I am a big Tim Burton fan and I am really looking forward to this film. However, seeing a soundtrack of rock songs makes me sad. I am not against such soundtracks and I own quite a few, but they have their place and I cannot see this being a part of that place. I am worried about how they will be crammed in. I hope for the best.

Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan Join Source Code
Source Code is the next project for Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie (think he's tired of hearing that yet) and director of the fantastic film Moon. These actresses are scheduled to join Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays a soldier involved in an experimental military project to track down a terrorist.

Rob Zombie to Direct CSI: Miami Episode
Really? It will definitely be interesting to see how his horror sensibilities will translate to a mainstream television show. I am a big fan of his and I am quite interested to see how this works out. I also have to wonder if any of his actor stable will appear?

Shout Factory! Gets Rights to Roger Corman Films
More than 50 films have been acquired by Shout Factory! who has plans to restore and release on DVD these films. Titles include Piranha: Special Edition DVD, Humanoids From The Deep, Up From The Depths, Demon Of Paradise in April, Rock ’N’ Roll High School: Special Edition DVD, Suburbia, Death Race 2000, Warlords Of The 21st Century, Deathsport, Forbidden World and Galaxy Of Terror.

Four Brothers to Get a Sequel?
This John Singleton directed reimagining of John Wayne's The Sons of Katie Elder was surprisingly good and very effective. It appears that Mark Wahlberg is exploring sequel ideas. I am in the camp that a sequel is not needed.

The Collector DVD in April
This is mainly here to warn you away. This horror film made of Saw scraps is absolutely terrible. There is a reason it is taking so long to get to DVD. Nobody wants to see it.

Marc Webb to Direct Spider-Man Reboot?
This is a very interesting idea. Webb recently made his feature debut with the fantastic (500) Days of Summer. It certainly is outside the box thinking and I would be down with seeing what he could do.

Star Wars Burlesque
This needs no comment. It left me speechless.

Nimrod Antal to Direct Spidey?
Hot on the heels of the Marc Webb rumor comes this one. Antal is friends with Raimi and that may help get his foot in the door. Antal is a talented director saddled with a lame screenplay in Armored is currently working on Predators. I suspect those results will go a long way towards giving this rumor any credence. I believe he has the skill and visual ability to do it and I bet the film would be quite interesting. Perhaps he could team with Webb? Now there's an idea....

Keanu Reeves to Star in Jekyll

Universal pictures is ramping up a production of the classic tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Why they have chosen to go with Keanu Reeves in the lead is beyond me.

Now, don't get me wrong, I like Reeves. He may not be a terribly good actor, but he always puts himself out there in a variety of roles, for better or worse. I just have to question whether or not his particular skill set is right for the dual roles of Jekyll an Hyde. Reeves tends to be rather one note in his performances and you would think that this film would require a little more than he could offer. Well, one can hope that whoever helms he film knows how to bring out the animal in Reeves, so to speak.

The movie is planned to be a modern update set in the present. Justin Haythe has signed on to pen the screenplay. Haythe's most recent work was Revolutionary Road. That said, I am expecting plenty of yelling to go along with some stiff acting.

The Mechanic to be Remade

The 1972 Charles Bronson film is gearing up for a remame. This time around Jason Statham will be stepping into the Bronson role for director Simon West. Seems like an interesting choice, no?

The original film told the story of a deached hitman who finds himself training the son of one of his victims. It is a plot that has been recycled in the past, most notably in Luc Besson's Leon: The Professional.

Statham seems like a good choice for the role. He may not have the grzzled look of Bronson, but he does have what it takes to play a hard-edged assassin, at least I think so.

As for Simon West in the director's chair? He was fun with Con Air, but his last film was the awful When a Stranger Calls. One can only hope he does better than that.

Seagal and Van Damme Team for Weapon

(The information provided for this article by Platform Media Group has since been retracted)

New production company, Flagship Films, and producers Alison Semenza (Zig Zag, Green Dragon) and Todd Moyer (Wing Commander, Virus) are bringing together two of the 80's hottest fading action stars for the first time in the same film. The film, called Weapon, will star Steven Seagal (Under Siege) and Jean Claude Van Damme (Hard Target).

29_vandamme_lglIf this was fifteen years ago, I would probably be more excited than I am, but I would be lying if I did not admit to being a little giddy at the prospect. It will be fun to see these two non-actors go toe to toe. I can picture Seagal's constantly constipated expression used in reaction to a Van Damme split.

The plot reminds me of Assassins, which featured Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone as a pair of rival, you guessed it, assassins. In Weapon Seagal and Van Damme will be assassins who form an alliance to take down a DEA backed drug cartel. The former will be a sharpshooter, while the latter will be a knife man.

seagal-guitar-300x380Sounds like the perfect set up for some fisticuffs! Well, perhaps not. It looks like they are settingup a shield to cover up Seagal's inability to move like he once could, not to mention hiding the girth he has grown over the years. If the two were to fight today, I think you would have to give the edge to Van Damme. I just hope that if the two do fight, that it looks better than the Jet Li/Jason Statham chopped mess in War.

The film is set to go before cameras in July with a screenplay by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas (Numb3rs, Friday Night Lights). I wonder if the plan is for a theatrical release? I cannot believe that it is, as there is probably not a large enough audience that still cares about these two all that much. On DVD/Blu-ray, however, it could do well with a wider casual audience.

Press Release:

FLAGSHIP FILMS LAUNCHES WITH WEAPON;

STEVEN SEAGAL AND JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME TO STAR

IN FIRST JOINT APPEARANCE EVER

New Production Company Teams Veteran Actioners with Veteran Producers

Alison Semenza and Todd Moyer; WEAPON Goes Before Cameras in July.

Essential Entertainment to Handle Foreign Sales

LOS ANGELES, CA – April 15, 2009 – The armada of independent production in all genres has a new flagship—Flagship Films, a new production company from veteran producers Alison Semenza and Todd Moyer.

In announcing the new company, Moyer and Semenza have also announced their first production: WEAPON.Å¡ This film will unite two of the world’s biggest names in action and thrillers, Steve Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme, who have never appeared in a film together—until now. Moshe Diamont will also produce the film which is written by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas (Numb3rs; Friday Night Lights).

In WEAPON, JACK CONWAY (Steven Seagal) and DEREK CHASE (Jean Claude Van Damme) are the two best assassins in the world—but unknown to each other. While Conway is a master sharpshooter, Chase is equally skilled with a knife. These two rival assassins form an uneasy alliance to take down the head of a drug cartel, which is backed by the DEA. The producers announced today that principal photography on WEAPON will commence in July 2009 on locations in and around New Mexico and Vancouver.šš They expect to confirm a director in the next several weeks.

Steve Seagal defined the opaque, resolute action hero of the ‘90’s.Å¡ Best known for UNDER SEIGE, where he uttered the enduring line, “I’m just a cook,” other memorable (and high grossing) roles include EXECUTUVE DECISION, HARD TO KILL, and MARKED FOR DEATH. For his part, Jean-Claude Van Damme, “the Muscles from Brussels,” has more than three dozen films to his credit, with worldwide grosses in excess of $1 billion.Å¡ He was nominated for three MTV Movie Awards—for DOUBLE IMPACT, NOWHERE TO RUN and HARD TARGET.

A former agent whose first client was Peter Jackson, Moyer helped to define the comic book to film genre in a seven year stint with Dark Horse Comics, setting up numerous comic properties at all the major studios including THE MASK, TIMECOP, VIRUS, BARB WIRE, MYSTERYMEN, ALIEN VS. PREDATOR, and more. He served as co-producer on VIRUS and TIMECOP as well as producer on BARB WIRE. At Steven Seagal’s Steamroller Productions, he oversaw production of two Seagal films at Warner Bros., FIRE DOWN BELOW and GLIMMERMAN.Å¡ Under his own shingle, No Prisoners Productions, he produced WING COMMANDER (Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr.) and GEORGE AND THE DRAGON (Michael Clarke Duncan), as well as music videos and commercials.Å¡ Moyer returns to production after several years raising a family in upstate New York.

Alison Semenza has produced over 50 feature-length films, starting at Royal Oaks Entertainment and moving on to Phoenician films; among her credits there were THE CONFESSION with Alec Bladwin andš IF.DOG.RABBIT with Mathew Modine. She joined Franchise Pictures in 1999 as Vice President of Production, overseeing the Franchise Classic Division, which produced Sundance favorite THE GREEN DRAGON (Forest Whitaker and Patrick Swayze) and ZIG ZAG, with John Leguizamo and Wesley Snipes.š As an independent producer since 2003, she has made three films with Wesley Snipes and PURSUED with Christian Slater. Her latest film, POWDER BLUE, which reunites her with Swayze and Whitaker and also stars Jessica Biel, Ray Liotta and Lisa Kudrow, has just been completed.

Coincidentally, both worked on films with the two WEAPON stars; Moyer served as producer on one of Van Damme’s last US theatrical releases, Universal’s TIMECOP, while Semenza produced one of Seagal’s most recent theatrical release, HALF PAST DEAD.

“Alison and I are delighted to be in business together, and to come out swinging,” says Moyer of his partner Semenza.Å¡ She replies, “Todd and I play to each other’s strengths in action, thriller, fantasy and science fiction.Å¡ Together we’re hoping to become a potent combination in 21st’century production.”Å¡ Flagship’s goal is to produce 5 films per year, with 3 expected to be filmed in 2009.

Jere Hausfater’s distribution/foreign sales agent Essential Entertainment, who distributes dozens of films each year including DEFIANCE and MY ONE AND ONLY, has signed on for worldwide sales of WEAPON, which they expect to be brisk.Å¡

Kristen Bell to Star in You Again

Director Andy Fickman is finally making a movie without Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. For his third straight Disney feature, following The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain, Fickman will be working with Kristen Bell, last seen on the big screen in the long in development Fanboys.

The movie will feature Bell as a character who learns her brother is marrying the woman who made her life hell during their school years. Certainly sounds like a genre busting winner to me. Perhaps I am being a little too harsh, I do not expect Disney to deliver groundbreaking cinema, all I want is solid filmmaking that is safe for the family wih the occasionally strong piece of work. This occasionally happens, and I think Fickman's The Game Plan was surprisingly good, will this follow suit? We shall see.

This news is being reported by First Showing.net, and they are not shy in saying they will likely not see the film. I, on the other hand, am not shy in saying I will see anything with Kristen Bell in it. Now, if we could only get some more Veronica Mars.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Over?

IMDB.com is reporting that an Entertainment Weekly insider is saying that the Terminator series will not be returning for a third season. This makes me sad.

Sure, the series got off to a slow start, but the first season did gather some steam before it concluded last Spring. Then the second season started with a bang. Seriously, the second season premiere is what good television is all about, it had action, drama, thrills, comedy, and truly got the arc off to a great start.

Now, the second season sagged here and there, but generally it was terrific stuff. The season recently concluded and it ended on a high note that made my jaw drop. I think I can live with it as s finale, although I am disappointed to here its impending doom.

Is Dollhouse to follow? I certainly hope not.

Terminator: Salvation - The Toys

Well, I guess they are going full steam ahead with marketing the Terminator franchise to kids. Gone are the days of R-rated violence, action, and themes. Nothing drills this fact home more than the toy line that will accompany the new film.

(click for more images at Ain't It Cool News)

This also casts something of a shadow over the film as a whole. The trailers look pretty exciting, but I do not get the sense there is a lot of intelligence behind it. It looks like McG and crew went for flash over substance. I hope t be proven wong, as I do want to like the movie.

Iron Man 2 and Mickey Rourke

Well, it finally appears that the ink is on the page. First he was in it, then he wasn't, and now he is. Mickey Rourke has signed on to play the main villain in the sequel to the hit hero flick, according to Variety. As if I wasn't already excited for the sequel.

Rourke will be playing a Russian villain called Whiplash who will incorporate elements of that character as well as another Russian baddie, the Crimson Dynamo. It appears the on/off issues were related to money. The initial offer of $250,000 seems to be a low ball figure for the surging Rourke, and his agent fought for more. He won, but the figure has not been released.

Robert Downey Jr. has courted Mickey for awhile now, including approaching him at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. His persistence paid off. It will be interesting to see these two work together. Considering both of their checkered pasts, can you imagine what the insurance would have been like just a few years ago? I wonder if it is still bad? I woud have to think it would be.

Rehearsals are nearing as preparations for the sequel are beginning to ramp up for a 2010 release. Jon Favreau will return to direct (and will go on to helm The Avengers next), along with screenwriter Justin Theroux. Rourke will join Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Frank Langella, and Scarlett Johansson (as the Black Widow).

New Fantastic Four on the Horizon

IESB.net is reporting that Fantastic Four is gearing up for a remake. Surprised? Yeah, me too.

It seems that Fox likes the successful formula that made Iron Man a hit last year and is seeking to replicate that film's success. As odd as I think it is for a film to get the reboot treatment so close to its first emergence, I am definitely intrigued by the possibility of correcting issues of those first two films.

Yes, this is a planned reboot meaning that none of the original cast or creative team will be returning. So, let the fantasy casting begin! Hopefully the casting steps it up from the first two (although I must admit to liking Rise of the Silver Surfer). The casting of three quarters of the four was good, with the exception beign Jessica Alba. It will be interesting to see who they find to fill the spandex.

All of that said, FF has great potential for big, epic stories laced with humor, not unlike Iron Man. You know, that is the perfect film to take cues from, as I think the comically serious tone would be perfect for this franchise.

Patrick McGoohan, Dead at 80

Patrick McGoohan has passed away following a short illness (details not disclosed). He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

I cannot claim any great and detailed knowledge of the man or his career, but it is always sad for someone to lose a family member. When that person is a celebrity, they belong to a bigger family, one that involves many people who never met personally. An actor/artist can have an impact on anyone, anywhere, at anytime. At this time my thoughts go out to Mr. McGoohan's family and friends.

I will remember Mr. McGoohan for his work on The Prisoner, a show that I have been meaning to watch all of, but have been fascinated with the few episodes I have seen.

Watchmen Settlement Imminent

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the legal spat between Fox and Warner Brothers over the upcoming Watchmen release is at an end as the two sides will present their proposal to the courts on Friday and request the case be dismissed. This can be seen as nothing other than a good thing.

Frankly, I am glad to see this coming to an end. Anything that would have abnormally delayed the release can be seen as nothing but bad.

Details have not been disclosed, but it is expected involve a lump payment to Fox as well as a percentage of the box office gross. Expect a formal press release on Friday. Furthermore, it is said that Warner is going after producer Larry Gordon, who originally came to them with the deal, for reimbursement for the cost of the settlement.

Terms aside, let us all rejoice!

Upcoming Film Scores

Upcoming Film Scores has posted their list of 10 highly anticipated scores for 2009. The list looks pretty darn good. Although, all I really hope for is that it is more memorable than 2008. It is not that it was a bad year for scores, but I did not find many to be all that memorable. Of course, I just may not have been paying close enough attention.

The list contains some pretty exciting films that should provide some grand theatrical music, from James Horner's Avatar to Alan Silvestri's GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra to Danny Elfman's Wolfman (a film that was pushed from April to November).

However, my most highly anticipated score of their top ten is Michael Giacchino's Star Trek. I am very much looking forward to his take on the classic theme and where he takes it in JJ Abrams' revisionist take on the long running franchise. I have really enjoyed the work he has done for the likes of Lost, Alias, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Mission:Impossible III.

Other scores I have hopes for include Steve Jablonsky for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, his score for the first film is fantastic, and Javier Navarrete for The New Daughter, a thriller with Kevin Costner from the writer of [rec]. I love Navarrete's work on Pan's Labyrinth, simply outstanding.

If nothing else, we should get some good music!

Seven Films for the Special Effects Oscar

The Academy has released the short list for the special effects Academy Award for the 2009 ceremonies. Voting members will get to view a 15 minute long clip show from each film before nominating the three that will be in the finals for the award. Here is that short list:

  • Australia
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • The Dark Knight
  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army
  • Iron Man
  • Journey to the Center of the Earth
  • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Interesting list. Off the top of my head I feel safe in saying the bottom two will not make the final cut. The effects in those movies just were not great. Sure, they were effective, but they are at the bottom of this particular pile.

Next, I would cut Australia. Again, there is some nice work done here, but it pales next to the other nominees. I am sure it will fall by the way side.

That leaves four films and a much tougher decision. Which one will not make the cut? All four of the remaining films have some great work. I think that The Dark Knight will be overlooked in the big categories and will be left to fight for tech awards like this for consolation, so there is one that will make it. The next one to make the cut will be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, not what you would traditionally look at as a special effects film, but there are a lot and the work done to age Pitt is spectacular, it also has some momentum so it will go through to the final round.

One spot and two films left. I think both of these films have great work in them, with the edge going to Hellboy II, at least in my eyes. However, Iron Man is the bigger film here and I think it will get the go ahead to make it to the big show. This despite my desire of Hellboy II to win based on this bunch.

So, the finals will look like this:

  • The Dark Knight
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Iron Man

And the statue goes to: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, although I would rather it go to Iron Man from this trio.

It will be interesting to see how close I am...

New Doctor Who Chosen

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Matt Smith is to be the new lead of Doctor Who. And with that announcement I can here a collective: "Who?" Hehe, funny on many levels..... In any case, the television actor, who is virtually unknown, at least here in the States, will be the new Doctor.

It was a few months ago that news broke that David Tennant would be leaving following the fourth series and a few more televised movies. It is a shame, as I have really enjoyed his run as the good Doctor. He brought great humor and intelligence to the role. Of course, I was unsure of his replacing Christopher Eccleston after his one season run left quite the impression.

Matt Smith, 26, will be the youngest to step into the Doctor's shoes and pilot the Tardis. Hopefully he will not disappoint. We will see when episodes begin airing in 2010.

Dope to Release No Regret in March

Wow, I really did not think this band was still around. I am happy to discover they are. No Regret will be the band's first release since 2005's American Apathy. I love that album, the lyrics are not exactly deep, but if you want something that flat out rocks, it does the trick. The new album is set to land on March 10, 2009, so reports Blabbermouth.

It will be interesting to see how much the band has changed over the past few years, if at all. The band has gone through a number of line-up changes over the years. Since the last album, only two remain, Edsel Dope (of course), and guitarist Virus. To round out the lineup they have added Mudvayne's guitarist Greg Tribbett's younger brother Tripp on bass (formerly of Twisted Method), and ex-Genitorturer's drummer Angel Bartolotta.

While I would never consider Dope to be a great band, they have a lot to be admired. Edsel is a tireless promoter. He has kept the band going on the independent scene when their label deal went south. He has also done much to put tour packages together to keep them on the road doing their thing. If nothing else it is a success of personal drive.

I am looking forward to this album as well as the opportunity to see them live again. Their setlists may be a bit predictable, but the energy is first rate.
