Music Review: Bloody Hammers - Spiritual Relics

Slowly, ever so slowly, movies have overtaken all as my entertainment of choice. I am not complaining about that. However, I am discovering hat I am missing music. My music listening has become more and more a passive experience and sometimes I feel like too much is passing me by. To that end, I want to try and write a little more about music. Just a little, I don't want to hurt your eyes too much. That brings me to a recent discovery, Bloody Hammers and their sophomore album, Spiritual Relics. It is not exactly mind blowing, but it is attention holding.

Music Video: Red Fang - "Blood Like Cream"

I do not know much about Red Fang, but their music rocks. On top of that, they clearly have a sense of humor. Not a terrible combination. They have released a video for their new single, “Blood Like Cream.” It is a fun take on a zombie apocalypse and features Portlandia's Fred Armisen. Check it out:

Music Review: Witchcraft - Witchcraft

I am not sure I adequately explain just what it is about this band that hypnotizes me. There are times when I put their discography on a loop and just let it play for hours. I am not always listening to it attentively, but the rhythm and groove is always there. The band was formed back in 2000 and released this self titled debut in 2004. As soon as you hot play and the titular track begins to play, you will transported away from the mundane, into a melding of past and present powered by fuzzy guitar grooves and soaring vocals.

Music Review: Black Sabbath - 13

I don't remember just how old I was, but I know I was young. I was not much of a music fan yet, but I had inherited an old receiver and turntable from my father and was listening to some of his old records. Among the stacks I uncovered Black Sabbath's Paranoid. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before and I listened to it over and over again. I remember listening to "Electric Funeral" incessantly. I would later learn the importance of this band and these early recordings. Now, we have new music from these legendary creators of doom.

Music Review: Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred for Mankind

A lot of people seem to love this album, but if I said I did, I would be lying. I don't think its terrible and it may just be a great album as many seem to think. I think it is a good album, it is one that will definitely get under the skin, but there is something about it that just doesn't click. I cannot say that I care for the sporadic use of sampled audio clips throughout, they just stood out like a sore thumb and ruined the flow.

Music Review: Electric Wizard - Black Masses

While looking up some information on this band one thing became plainly apparent. That thing is me not being familiar with the band while everyone seems to be calling them one of their favorites. It never ceases to amaze me just how much music is out there and how easy it is to have heard of someone else's favorite band. You almost have to be OCD about music to even come close to listening to a lot of different artists, no to mention the countless genres and sub-genres. It is a daunting task that I have chosen to not even engage in. I will take them as the come, if they strike my fancy, all the better. In the case of Electric Wizard, I doubt I will be call in them a favorite, but there is no denying they are pretty fascinating.

Music Review: The Georgian Skull - Mother Armageddon, Healing Apocalypse

Canadian act The Georgian Skull rose from the ashes of Mister Bones. Both acts feature front man All "The Yeti" Bones and until very recently I had never heard of either band. The Georgian Skull is certainly an dd choice for a band name, it's origin can be traced to an archaeological dig in the former Soviet state of Georgia. The site was home to a skull that is older than any humanoid found before and could throw what is understood about humanity's origins into question. Fascinating story. I wonder how the band came to us it as a band name.

Music Review: Cough - Ritual Abuse

Cough. Yes, that is the name of the band, not what my throat is begging me to do right now. Seeing a band name like this makes me wonder if all the good ones have been used. Cough. Really? I guess it doesn't really matter if he music is good, right? In the case of Cough it is good, really good, but I think it will take a certain sensibility to listen to it. It is a genre I have always been intrigued by but have never gotten very deep into. Perhaps I should change that. What genre is it? You can call it doom metal, you can call it sludge metal, just don't ask it to pick up the pace.
