Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

I have to admit, when I first saw the trailer for Edge of Tomorrow, I did not think much of it. It looked like a mash of Oblivion and Battle: Los Angeles, with a touch of Groundhog's Day. It did not look like something that would deliver any high entertainment levels. Of course, it was a foregone conclusion that I would see it, it just isn't that sort of movie I am willing to completely write off. Then, as the release approached, positive word seemed to be coming from unexpected locations. Places I expected to see mediocre to poor reviews were giving it good notice. Interesting, maybe there is something to this after all.

Movie Review: Contamination (1980)

An abandoned ship floats into New York harbor. A few intrepid souls board the ship and begin to search it, looking for clues to what happened. Then they find it. Reading that, it sounds an awful lot like 1979's Zombi 2, but it is actually the start of Contamination from 1980. Instead of Lucio Fulci it is Luigi Cozzi (or Lewis Coates as he is often credited). It has also been known as Alien Contamination (in a cut version) and Toxic Spawn when it was on VHS way back in the day (also cut). The movie begins as an Alien rip off, but manages to have a life of its own, holding your attention through to the ending credits.

Sci Fi Invasion: The Brother from Another Planet

Oh, you sneaky box set, you. It is a set that has so much filler in it that you wonder if having fifty movies was worth the ten bucks I spent. Movie after movie of wasted time. Bad directing, effects, stories, acting, so much boredom created, and so many sleepless nights instantly cured. It is no wonder that I begin to think it is nothing but filler. Fortunately there is the occasional ray of light. I have finally stumbled across one of those special moments that makes all the junk worth wading through. Now, it could just be that it is good only in comparison to what immediately preceded, but I suspect not.

Sci Fi Invasion: Mission Stardust

Sometimes I have to wonder what they were thinking with some of the choices for the Sci Fi Invasion box set. I mean, yes, I am expecting a lot of bad movies, but this is getting ridiculous. Of course, I realize they are padding out the movie total with whatever public domain titles they come across that could possibly be watchable. I am also beginning to see why I took such a long break from watching movies in this set. So many bad movies. So many movies that leave me with little to really say about them.

Sci Fi Invasion: The Creeping Terror

The Sci Fi Invasion box set is starting to pick up steam. Granted, it is just little puffs of barely seen steam, but it is more than it has been able to muster over a two film span yet. You would have to consider it a tough task to follow up the entertaining mash up oddity Future Hunters. Now, to be honest, the follow up feature is entertaining in a completely different fashion. With Future Hunters you have a movie purposefully made to be an weird stew of a movie, this feature, on the other hand, never had a chance.

Movie Review: The Alien Factor

I like to think that I am open to low budget, no budget, old, local, independent movies. I think I am generally fair when watching these movies, but man, I am being tested. Perhaps I am not as open as I thought I was. This Sci-Fi Invasion bosses challenge is truly testing me. There are a boatload of incredibly boring and bad movies here that I am struggling to get through. The latest movie is no exception. It is called The Alien Factor and is just really bad.

Movie Review: Invaders from Space

I will not quit on you, Sci-Fi Invasion box set. No matter what kind of lame, bizarre, and boring junk you throw at me, I will keep coming back until the last movie is done. It may take some time, but I will get through. I just have to look at each movie as an opportunity, a new experience, and hopefully I will walk away with something. Good or bad, every movie adds to your experience. This latest experience is pretty unique. I cannot truthfully say I completely disliked it, but I cannot exactly recommend it either.

Movie Review: Extraterrestrial Visitors, aka Pod People

So, it seems that the ratio of watchable to awful films in this box set is 1 to 5. That means that after the watchable and modestly enjoyable Slipstream we were due to dive back into boredom. 1983's Extraterrestrial Visitors did not disappoint on the bad movie front. While not the worst I have experienced in this set, it is nowhere near good and nothing I would recommend you go out of your way for.

Movie Review: The Watch (2012)

The Watch is an interesting failure of a movie. It is not a complete waste, but it certainly suffers from poor pacing, being underwritten, and suffering from a poor promotional campaign brought about by that unfortunate incident in Florida (we all know what it is and I would like to avoid talking about it). Yes, those promotional issues began early in its promotion cycle when the movie's title was changed from The Neighborhood Watch to simply The Watch. Not a drastic change, but a necessary one under the circumstances. If only to had stopped there.
