When I first saw the trailer for San Andreas, I cannot say my reaction was positive. It was not exactly negative either, it was more the equivalent of an eye roll when no one is looking. Upon further reflection, my eye roll stance somewhat softened. I figured, why not? I feel it has been awhile since I've seen a disaster movie, that is, a movie that wasn't a disaster, but rather about a disaster. How bad could it be? On the other hand, it is also nice to see some different landmarks getting destroyed than the usual ones in New York and DC.

Movie Review: Noah (2014)
So, Noah has arrived and it can now stand, or attempt to stand, on its own merits. It is a movie that does not seem to have a precise target audience. It seems to be going after a cross section of the movie-going public. Action aficionados have something there, there are the disaster elements, the obvious religious connection, fans of Crowe/Connelly/Hopkins/Watson, and those who like the director, Darren Aronofsky. I have to be honest, my interest was sealed by Aronofsky. The guy makes interesting films that exist on the fringe of Hollywood. He can attract stars but seems uninterested in playing by Hollywood rules. It made me curious.

Critical Capsule: Pompeii 3D
So, the other day, against better judgment, I went and saw Pompeii 3D. I had a feeling going in that it was probably going to be a mistake, but I found some reasons to justify my presence due to the director's prior work and his 3D resume, and there I was. The trailers did not look particularly interesting, plus we know how it ends. Still, there I was, front and center, opening day with maybe three or four other people in the theater. That was the total there, no fear of selling out and no fear that I would not get my preferred seat location. As you can see, I am also reaching for things to say.

Movie Review: Aftershock (2013)
So, the other day I just happened to be scanning the local theaters to see what they had, not sure why, there usually isn't a whole lot of variety. Then I came across a theater I haven't been to in years and discovered they had the Eli Roth produced Aftershock. I had heard of the film, even seen the trailer, but figured I wouldn't see it in theaters since it was only getting a limited release (along with VOD, I believe). Talk about a pleasant surprise.
