Movie Review: The Ice Cream Truck

When I first started watching The Ice Cream Truck, I was not sure what to expect. The trailer seemed to indicate a strange Stepford Wives-esque town with a serial killer ice cream truck driver problem. Now, that seems interesting enough. It looked like it was on the edge of some sort of Twilight Zone-ish feel, but now that it is over I am not quite sure what to think. It is a bit more serious in tone and slightly more languidly paced than I was expecting. The movie simultaneously satisfies and disappoints and seems to be somewhat lacking in actual horror, despite having the obvious potential.

Movie Review: Christmas Evil

As the Christmas season rolls around each year, there are a few certain films that always get watched. I always visit seasonal classics such as Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Elf, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Then there are the action regulars, most notably Die Hard, Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and Lethal Weapon. Those are all well and good, but being a horror movie fan, there are the darker holiday films that need to have some time spent with them, this includes the likes of Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night. In recent years a new film has come to my attention and has quickly risen through the ranks, Christmas Evil.----- Read the rest at Shit Movie Fest as part of annual 25 Days of Shitmas.

Blu-ray Review: Goodnight Mommy

Do you ever watch a movie that has an impact on you, but you are not sure you quite understand why? Then, when you watch it a second time, things become clearer and the effect becomes that much more profound? That is the experience I had with Goodnight Mommy. I watched it, was engrossed by it, was creeped out by it, and was left wondering what I had just watched. Then I gave it a second pass and things cleared up. Yes, a lot is left to the imagination, it is not exactly heavy on the exposition, but therein lies the beauty.

Movie Review: The Babadook

This past August, while enjoying my time at Hudson Horror Show IX, I had a conversation with Fangoria's Michael Gingold about upcoming horror movies to keep an eye out for. One of the titles he mentioned, the only one I actually remember, was The Babadook. He said it was one of the best in recent memory. The name was unique enough that it stuck. In the weeks after that I kept hearing nothing but praise for the movie. Of course, my interest was piqued and I knew I had to see it. Still, I must admit to being a little bit skeptical. Heck, I even kinda wished I did not like it. You know, not to seem like I was going along with the hype.

Blu-ray Review: Chained

Jennifer Lynch is not a filmmaker I know all that much about. I have not seen Boxing Helena (I think I have a copy of it around here somewhere), Surveillance is sitting in my Netflix queue, and I have heard Hisss is a mess. So, Chained stands alone as my first exposure to the work of Jennifer Lynch. Is it a good movie? I would like to say wholeheartedly yes, but I can't. I think it is a very good movie spoiled by an awful ending. Seriously, watch it until the last five or ten minutes, shut it off and make up your own.
