Retro-view: Se7en

I like to think that I watch a lot of movies. There are movies that get replayed frequently, and there are those that go years and years between viewings. These lesser watched films are not necessarily bad or not worth revisiting, it is just the way it goes sometimes. Even if it is a great movie, I do not always watch them as often. The result of this great time in between viewings means that when I do watch them it can feel like watching them for the first time. This was the case when I recently saw Se7en again. Sure, I remember some, but it is like rediscovering its greatness.

Movie Review: The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Movies that come with a considerable amount of hype always run the risk of disappointing, of letting someone down after the buildup. It is always a fear of mine, I may listen to some of it, but I try not to get too wrapped up in said hype for fear of letting it sway my actual feelings about any given film. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is the latest film to arrive with a lot of hype and positive buzz around it. Friends messaged me asking if I’d seen it, positive comments on social media, even Stephen King is singing its praises. So, while I was anxious to see it, I went in trying to keep myself in check, just in case.

Movie Review: The Signal (2014)

When I first learned of The Signal, my first thought was somebody went a remade the 2007 film, The Signal. That idea makes no sense and was quickly discarded. It was born more out of two movies in a relatively short period of time bearing the same title. Then I saw the trailer and was intrigued, I wasn't sure what it was, but it looked to be right up my alley. Now, I have seen the film and I initially left thinking I really liked it, however, the more time that passes from my theater exiting, my estimation has dropped somewhat. I still like it and have no problem recommending it, however there are reservations now. Basically, watch and enjoy, but recognize the flaws that surround it.

Movie Review: Death Carries a Cane

After a weekend filled with Godzilla films, it was nice to switch gears and take a trip back to the 1970's. The movie of the moment is a 1973 Italian giallo called Tormentor. Well, the copy I watched had that title, when I went looking for more information I found nothing. So, I looked up the director, Maurizio Pradeaux, and started going through his thankfully short filmography. There, everything was in Italian, it took a few clicks, but I found it! The movie was originally titled Passi di danza su una lama di rasoio and seems to be more commonly known in English as Death Carries a Cane. I must say, I like that title.

Movie Review: Veronica Mars

Ten years ago Rob Thomas (not the Matchbox 20 guy) introduced us to the character of Veronica Mars and a whole host of colorful supporting characters. It was a show that I took to pretty quickly. Unfortunately, it was canceled after three seasons. The series, of the same name, ended up being another critical success and popular failure that became a victim of the UPN and WB network merger. I was sad to see it go, but that is the way things seem to go. I never did think I would see the character again, despite Rob Thomas talking about bringing the series back or making a movie. Now here we are.

Movie Review: Dylan Dog - Dead of Night

Based on a graphic novel by the same guy who crafted the superb Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man) and directed by the guy who gave us that cool reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (remember TMNT?), Dylan Dog would seem to have the good basis for a movie. Add to that the fact that it is a tale that crosses noir with the supernatural, a hard boiled detective type dealing with an underworld involving vampires, werewolves, and zombies, and it would seem to be a can't miss. Unfortunately, the finished product is anything but a winner and is much more miss than can't.
