Iron Man 2 and Mickey Rourke

Well, it finally appears that the ink is on the page. First he was in it, then he wasn't, and now he is. Mickey Rourke has signed on to play the main villain in the sequel to the hit hero flick, according to Variety. As if I wasn't already excited for the sequel.

Rourke will be playing a Russian villain called Whiplash who will incorporate elements of that character as well as another Russian baddie, the Crimson Dynamo. It appears the on/off issues were related to money. The initial offer of $250,000 seems to be a low ball figure for the surging Rourke, and his agent fought for more. He won, but the figure has not been released.

Robert Downey Jr. has courted Mickey for awhile now, including approaching him at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. His persistence paid off. It will be interesting to see these two work together. Considering both of their checkered pasts, can you imagine what the insurance would have been like just a few years ago? I wonder if it is still bad? I woud have to think it would be.

Rehearsals are nearing as preparations for the sequel are beginning to ramp up for a 2010 release. Jon Favreau will return to direct (and will go on to helm The Avengers next), along with screenwriter Justin Theroux. Rourke will join Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Frank Langella, and Scarlett Johansson (as the Black Widow).

Mickey Rourke will be a great addition to the Iron Man crew; he's a really talented actor despite all the other drama he attracts to himself
