Festival Recap: Hudson Horror Show 14 has Ended

Seven years in and going stronger than ever. It is amazing watching this force of cinema exert its will on an audience and watching them all eat it up. Beginning as a small, unassuming screening of some horror movies, some local, independently made shorts, and a few vendors, it has grown into a colossal beast, an entity known far and wide, able to sell out theaters in minutes. One of the biggest changes was when they expanded into a second theater last year. Even the threat of losing the venue a few years back was not enough to get them down. The Hudson Horror Show has become an institution and easily among the best genre related events of the year.

I am so sad that it is over. You honestly have no idea. For a day the whole world just disappears and all I have are the movies. Well, not just the movies, I have the friends. I probably sound like a broken record, but I am sure some of you can attest, the two annual Hudson Horror Show marathons are among my favorite days of the year. Nothing else matters. I get to sit in a theater, watch movies, get some cool stuff from cool vendors, and hang out with friends. There really is nothing quite like it. Even if the movie is a bit lackluster, there is always something special about seeing it projected from 35mm with a crowd.

Screening Report: Hudson Horror Invades the Alamo III (Alamo Drafthouse, 9/19/15)

If you did not know, the Hudson Horror Show is a pretty big deal. You go somewhere and mention them, people know what you are talking about, their eyes light up with excitement. There is a growing camaraderie amongst the horror marathon that is amazing. Go to these shows and you instantly become a member of the family. Anyway, this past weekend the Hudson Horror crew spearheaded their third invasion of the Alamo Drafthouse, and it was a sold out affair. This double feature played to a lively crowd and went over extraordinarily well.

Hudson Horror Show Invades the Alamo! (Again!!)

If you know me, you have probably heard me talk about the Hudson Horror Show. There really is no doubt about this. Over the past five years, this biannual show has become one of my most anticipated events of the year. I have become friends with the great guys who run the show, as well as seemingly everybody else who goes to or vends there. I am hard pressed to think of a better event for horror and exploitation fans than these. Movies and trailers projected on the big screen from 35mm film in a theater full of like-minded fools. err, folks? What's not to love?

Hudson Horror Show XI – Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the woods on Elm Street with a .45...

Year six has begun for Hudson Horror Show. the show that never expected to make it past 1 is now in its sixth year of delivering a show that our horror brethren flock to on a biannual basis. This is the one show I would lament to loss of, but that is not going to happen now is it? There was a scare last year, but the guys bulled through and we are surging forward with a renewed passion, vigor, and passionate fan base. This show sold out in a record 88 minutes (give or take depending on who you talk to). There is no denying the following Hudson Horror has earned over the years.

News: Hudson Horror Show #11 is Coming!

If you know me, you know how much Hudson Horror Show means to me. It is not something I can easily explain, and also something that has grown over the course of the group's ten shows over the past five years. I think what really struck it home for me was how I felt when they almost folded following the loss of their venue after their eigth show. Fortunately, the venue was saved allowing them to continue playing host to the movie marathon. This led directly to the success of their return show this past August, and only built throught the tenth show (which sold out in 4 days). With a their 11th show fast approaching, you will not want to be left out in the cold.

Hudson Horror Show X - The Night Train Mystery is Boiled while They Creep (or something...)

Hudson Horror Show X is now in the rear view mirror and, once again, it provided to be an eventful day filled with movies, wares, friends, and fun. It is really starting to get repetitive when I write about these shows once they happen. There is a common thread to these recaps, about the fun, the friends, whatever. It is almost like I am writing the same column over and over again, but it really doesn't matter. If you could see the smile I have on my face for the entire day, not to mention as I think about it for days after. It sounds really corny, but it is true, I love this event and I eagerly look forward to each and every one as if it were the first.

Show Review: Hudson Horror Show IX - The Lady Maniac is Burning Max (it's a Double Mystery!)

They said it couldn't happen, they said it would never occur again, they were confident in their victory, but they were so, so wrong. Yes, things were touch and go for a little while, but things are back on track and stronger than ever. Even with a shorter window for promotion, the Hudson Horror team pulled it off, delivering another sold out show. It is starting to become rather commonplace to report on a sold out Hudson Horror show, but it really is somethng special. The show brings together the Northeast horror family, hailing from multiple states, but all bonded by that special love that cannot be taken away, cannot be written off, and will not be denied.

The Rumors are True: Hudson Horror Show IX is a Go!

After what felt like an eternity, the reality of the return of the Hudson Horror Show is finally beginning to sink in. The thought of having to continue on with my life without his biannual event was almost too much to bear. It really has become some of my most anticipated events of the year. It is true, it is making a comeback on August 9, 2014 at the Empire Cineplex (formerly Silver Cinemas) in my backyard of Poughkeepsie, NY. The show is quickly shaping up to be an amazing one, and if you are a fan of cult cinema, you will want to be here.

Hudson Horror Show 8: Invasion of the Demon while you Escape from the Thing on the Express

My, how you have grown. It is hard to believe it has been four years since Hudson Horror Show first opened its doors. In that time, spanning 8 shows, the horror and exploitation loving collective has shown all manner of movies, from Italian classics like The Beyond, to American landmarks like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, to classic splatter like The Evil Dead, to exploitation like Switchblade Sisters, to complete oddball titles like Inframan. and everything in between. On top of that, they have fostered the growth of the local horror community. More than a get together to watch movies, it is an extended dysfunctional family reunion. It has been amazing to see this show grow from its humble beginnings into this behemoth in such a short period of time.

Hudson Horror Show 7: The Experience

So. Hudson Horror Show 7 is now in the rearview mirror. Parting such sweet sorrow. As the show enters its fourth year, I have come to realize that their two shows a year are among my most anticipated of the year. My interest was initially about the movies, but it as changed as the sow has grown. It is now as much about the movies as it is about the experience.

Hudson Horror 666: Aftermath

Another one for the ages. Hudson Horror 666 is over and done with, gone into the annals of time. I will be remembered fondly. In all seriousness, this was the sixth show over the past three years and they have all been memorable experiences. Hudson Horror stands as the only local event celebrating horror and exploitation cinema, not to mention the glory of 35mm projection. I would like to say this was my favorite of the six shows, however each show holds a special place in my heart. They have each offered a mix of first time viewings and old favorites all seen in a way I had never seen them before.

Hudson Horror Show 666 Prepares to Unleash Hell!

It was sometime back in early 2010, I had stumbled across an article, I believe it was at Bloody Disgusting or perhaps Shock til ya Drop, that spoke of the original Evil Dead was going on tour. A 35mm print of the film was going to be making stops at various theaters around the country. I figured there was no way it would be anywhere near me, but it couldn't hurt to take a look at the schedule. Much to my surprise, I found it was coming to Poughkeepsie, NY, to play a something called The Hudson Horror Show. I was certainly excited at the prospect of seeing it on he big screen.
