Spider-Man: The Musical has a Mary Jane

Yes, you read that right, there is a musical version of Spider-Man is in the works and the first big piece of the casting puzzle has come to light. It came during an interview conducted by IESB.com during a junket stop for Darren Aronofsky's new film, The Wrestler (which I am really looking forward to). Oh, and no, Mary Jane will not be played by Mickey Rourke.

The interview was with Evan Rachel Wood and yes, it is she who will be singing it up as Spidey's main squeeze. She has musical experience, having been in Across the Universe (a fantastic film), so that should not be too much of an issue. The interview also revealed that rehearsals are slated to commence in June of 2009.

Now the question is who will be Peter Parker? Who will don the red and blue and swing across a Broadway stage? Rumors are that it will be Jim Sturgess, who co-starred with Wood in Across the Universe. I would be all right with that casting, although I think the idea of a Spider-Man musical to be a little suspect.

I keep thinking of the aborted Batman musical that Tim Burton tried to set up some years ago with Jim Steinman (Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell) handling songwriting duties. To get an idea of how this may have turned out, check out "Catwoman's Song" and "Joker's Song (Wonderful Toys)". "We are not amused."

In any case, Julie Taymor (again of Across the Universe) is set to direct with music and lyrics provided by Bono and The Edge of U2 fame.
