New Movies and Box Office Predictions for 12/19

This week's wide releases -
Shutter Island

Last week brought us a trio of films targeting a few different groups with all receiving mostly middling reviews. It will be interesting to see how they fare this week without a holiday to bolster their take. It will also be interesting to see how Avatar continues to do, the movie may no longer be in first, but it is definitely a force of nature. This week brings only one new movie to theaters on a national scale. Do you think it has a shot at nabbing the top spot?

Shutter Island. (2010, 138 minutes, R, thriller) Martin Scorsese returns to the fictional feature for the first time since his big Oscar win in 2006 for The Departed. His latest film is Shutter Island a thriller set in a maximum security mental hospital. Leonardo Dicaprio, in his fourth collaboration with Scorsese, stars as a federal marshall who is sent to investigate the apparent escape of one of the inmates. What he finds is much more than he bargained for. His investigation turns up much more about what is going on in the halls of the asylum. Our hero is trappd and things happen that cause him to doubt what he has experienced and possibly his own sanity. The film looks like it is going to be a lot of fun, creepy, scary, twisty, and I cannot wait. Joining Dicaprio in the cast is Mark Ruffalo, Sir Ben Kingsley, Elias Koteas, Michelle Williams, and Jackie Earle Haley.

Also opening this week, but not near me:
  • Celine: Through the Eyes of the World
  • Dreamkiller
  • The Ghost Writer
  • The Good Guy
  • Hapy Tears
  • Phyllis and Harold
Box Office Predictions
This week will bring us the third new number one film in as many weeks. Ever since Avatar tumbled to the strength of, ahem, Dear John, the top spot is turning into a revolving door as we get new number ones each week, a trend that will continue next week when Cop Out and The Crazies open up. Behind Shutter Island, which is sure to win the weekend, the back nine will be a dogfight as the returning films will scratch and claw for whatever they can get.

Here is how I think it could play out:
RankTitleBox Office
1Shutter Island$31 million
2Valentine's Day$22 million
3Avatar$20 million
4Percy Jackson$18 million
5Wolfman$15 million
6Dear John$9 million
7Tooth Fairy$4.5 million
8Crazy Heart$4 million
9From Paris with Love$3.25 million
10Edge of Darkness$2.5 million
