Joe Johnston to Direct Captain America Film

That's right, /film is reporting that former George Lucas protoge Joe Johnston is set to direct The First Avenger: Captain America for Marvel Studios. The film already has a release date, May 6, 2011. I guess he better get going!

Johnston is an interesting choice as he has not done anything terribly notable since Jurassic Park III in 2001. Yes, I know he also directed Hidalgo, but that is not a terribly memorable film. My best guess is that there is good word filtering out from the set of The Wolf Man (due in theaters next April) combined with positive feelings between Joe and the studio regarding his near miss directing of The Incredible Hulk.

What little we do know about the Captain America film is that it will be a period piece entirely set during World War II and that it will tie in with the Avengers film, which is set to hit theaters two months after Cap in 2011. So, whatever they are planning on doing they are going to need to get going soon as the two films will be in production almost simultaneously.
