Perhaps building off of the critical acclaim of Spellbound and dramatic potential that is contained within a spelling bee, comes Akeelah and the Bee. The movie is being released by Lionsgate Films on April 28th. In anticipation of that release comes this teaser trailer.
The story focuses on Akeelah, a young girl with a gift for words. She goes against her mother's wishes and begins to enter spelling competitions, eventually landing a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She trains with her teachers and principal, and friends and other people in her neighborhood. The film shows how a neighborhood comes together to back one of their own.
The trailer is very reminiscent of Spellbound. It contains montages of kids spelling words, reactions to wrong words, and the crowd cheering them on. It also shows young newcomer Keke Palmer, who made her big screen debut in Barbershop 2, interacting with her mother, played by Angela Bassett, and her school's principal, played by Laurence Fishburne. There is no dialog, but it all works towards building a feeling of sweetness. This could turn into a really good film, Keke's smile just lights up the screen.
