CD Review: Abdel Wright - Abdel Wright

Have you ever heard of Abdel Wright? No? Me neither. That is, until the CD landed on my doorstep. He is a Jamaican singer songwriter who delivers a radio friendly brand of reggae and folk. It is a nice combination of the two, never really veering to far to either side of the spectrum, yet still containing a unique voice which makes it stand out from the other radio friendly artists clogging the airwaves.

I can't claim to be a big fan of reggae, in fact, I have listened to very little music from the genre. I know, I need to do something about that. Abdel Wright may just end up being that catalyst to look into some other, more famous Jamaican exports.

I found the album to be mesmerizing. I come from a background that is primarily centered in the rock and metal world, although I have been known to stray into other regions of the musical spectrum. I'm glad I did. This is quality release, one that proves that hard work can pay off.

Abdel Wright has an easy flowing voice and plays nicely with the rootsy, folksy, acoustic based music. It is most evident in songs such as the opening track "Quicksand" and "Dust Under Carpet." It's really hard to pick songs out of the bunch as the whole album flows so well.

This is not the greatest album I've ever heard, but it is one of the better albums to put on if you want to play something straight through. Some album work better as a whole, while others feel as if they are made up of a bunch of singles. This is the kind of album you could throw on on a quiet Sunday evening. You can sit back get some great laid back music that has some brains to it and relax.

Bottomline. What we have here is an interesting new voice on the singer/songwriter circuit. Thoughtful lyrics, good music, and a new star on the rise. This is definitely worth giving some time to.

Recommended.
