Movie Review: The Hunger Games - Mockingjay: Part 2

Well, the series has come to close, not with a bang, but a whimper. This is not to say I did not enjoy the film, but it is certainly not without its flaws. I can say I was entertained, but considering how the series got off to a roaring success with its first two entries, the final two seem a little tired and worn out by comparison. I seriously think the franchise would have been better off, creatively, if the Mockingjay pair of films were just one film. The studio got greedy, and as they are wont to do with their high profile franchises, split the final book into two films (following Harry Potter, Twilight, and you could probably toss The Hobbit in there as well). Both final films felt stretched and padded with material to meet run time requirements.

Movie Review; Seventh Son

Today is born the seventh one, Born of woman the seventh son, And he in turn of a seventh son, He has the power to heal, He has the gift of the second sight, He is the chosen one, So it shall be written, So it shall be done, Seventh son of a seventh son, Seventh son of a seventh son, Seventh son of a seventh son, Seventh son of a seventh son. Oh, wait, what? This isn't an Iron Maiden concert? That explains why Julianne Moore is here. It is a shame, I suspect that a concert would have been more fun. I guess I really should say something about this big medieval fantasy tale of knights, swords, witches and monsters. Hey, that sounds like fun.

Movie Review: The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Pt. 1

So, the first half of the final chapter for The Hunger Games franchise has arrived in theaters. With it, it snagged the biggest opening of the year, just as it fell well short of its predictions and expectations. I always wonder about things like that, with a franchise as well received and popular as it is, to open up some $36 million less than its predecessor, where did the people go? Granted, I am not all about the opening weekend as I am about the quality, but it begs the question what resulted in the disparity? I guess it really doesn't matter, the movie is going to make plenty of bank. So, aside from the money, was the movie any good? Yes and no.

Movie Review: Non-Stop

Non-Stop is movie that really does not need a lot time spent on it from a critical perspective. This is not a movie that was made for critical reception, it is one made to merely entertain and make some money. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The first thing I thought was that they actually remade that old Ray Liotta movie, Turbulence. Of course, I knew the reality but it was still a humorous thought I had. The only thing I was hoping for when I saw it was for some fun, after all, it does feature Liam Neeson in the lead.

Blu-ray Review:Carrie (2013)

I remember seeing the first teaser and being intrigued. It was a simple crane shot past the burning school and ending on the blood soaked Carrie (Chloe Grace Moretz). It was something I was not sure was necessary considering how well regarded original film is, but I was still interested. Then the full trailer came out and while movie's quality still appeared to be good; however, it was one of those trailers that shows the whole movie condensed into a few minutes. Sure, we already know the story, but still it would have been nice to at least make it look like it had some surprises, right?

Movie Review: Carrie (2013)

I have to say, this Halloween season seems a little lackluster when it comes to widespread theatrical releases. It has been a long time since we have had an October without a Saw and/or Paranormal Activity. Like them, love them, or loathe them, it has been a decade since we have had am October without one. Their absence is conspicuous. The one horror movie we do get is a cross between a remake of the Brian DePlalma film and another adaptation of the Stephen King novel. The movie is Carrie.
