Revisiting a Murder: The Crow: Wicked Prayer

By the time The Crow: Wicked Prayer arrived in 2005, the franchise was already on life support. The movie had a brief one-week theatrical premiere before being unceremoniously dumped to the video market. To be fair, the movie really isn’t that good, it looks bad even next to the prior outing, the also direct to video The Crow: Salvation. With that said, as I revisit the film now, I still see it as a bad movie, but there are things that I have come to like about it. It is like there are good elements in spite of its efforts to be a bad movie. Overall, the feel is not unlike that of the latter Hellraiser sequels, made as a reason to hang on to the license.

DVD Review: Bad Asses

Two years ago a little movie came out based on an internet video of a bus fight. This little nugget of fact was taken by writer/director Craig Moss and fleshed out into an entire feature. The movie was called Bad Ass and it did not seem at all interested in being realistic. It was used as an excuse to turn an elderly man into a B-movie action hero. You know what? It worked. The movie was a lot more entertaining than it had any right to be. The low budget film proved to be successful enough to warrant a sequel, the cleverly titled Bad Asses.

Movie Review: Muppets Most Wanted

Three years ago the Muppets returned to the big screen. That movie had to be thought of as a gamble, I mean, the Muppets have not exactly been on the tongue of popular culture of late. Still, it looked like a fun movie, and it turned out to be fantastic. It was a movie that knew exactly what kind of uphill battle it had, it was a story about friendship and good things as much as it was a fight for survival, a claim for continued relevance. It is a movie that proved to be immensely enjoyable for all ages across all demographics, it was fun, funny, silly, and creative. It was inevitable that we would get a sequel. The biggest question is whether it would prove to be worthy.

Movie Review: Bad Ass (2012)

There is an interesting subset of the “based on a true story” movies. Rather than a person, or time period, or some other broad event, there are a few that take a small incident and build around that. This would include movies like Compliance and Stuck, both interesting films that you should look into. The latest entry to this subset of movies is called Bad Ass. These are movies that take headlines and events and build a movie around them. They do not purport to be entirely true, instead they use the real elements as a launching point for their story.

Movie Review: Machete Kills

It is hard to believe that it has been six years since the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez team up, Grindhouse, was released. No, it wasn't a big hit in theaters, but no matter, popular opinion is never a truly good test of quality.i had a blast with it and its trailers. Even more surprising is that one of the fake trailers made for that event was turned into a movie of its own. Now, that movie has spawned a sequel of its own, fighting the odds if you will. Whatever you want to call it, it puts a smile on my face.

Movie Review: The Crow - Wicked Prayer

As my series on the films of Brandon Lee came to a close with the amazing The Crow, I felt inspired to continue. This continuation meant moving forward with reviews of the other Crow films. Now, I have reached the end of that brief journey (it's not like covering the seemingly endless string of Hellraiser sequels). The final film (to the time of this writing, anyway) is by far the worst. It is goofy, poorly written, badly acted, and exceptionally dull.
