Trailer Park: Death Wish (2017) - Trailer 1

So, it has finally arrived. The first trailer for the Death Wish remake has arrived. When I first heard about it I thought, like I do about a lot of projects, I’ll believe it when I see it. It had been announced that Eli Roth would be directing and that Bruce Willis would be stepping into Charles Bronson’s legendary shoes. These announcements only enhanced the I’ll believe it when I see it feeling. Of course, there are those who decried the idea of a remake and others who seemed more than willing to give it a shot. Well, it is real, it is coming. What do you think?

Critical Capsule Two-fer: RED 2 meets R.I.P.D.

A few years ago an adaptation of the DC Comics title RED (standing for Retired Extremely Dangerous) arrived in theaters. It boasted a strong cast that included Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Mary Louise-Parker, as Karl Urban (as well as a cameo by the late Ernest Borgnine). It was well received and proved to be really entertaining, much more so than I was expecting it to be, anyway. Now, we are faced with a pair of films that feel somewhat connected, fighting each other with the same opening weekend.

Movie Review: G.I. Joe - Retaliation

The second G.I. Joe movie as finally arrived. It only took a nine-month delay, a 3D post-conversion and some extra scenes inserted. I am not sure I will ever bother to look up the real reasons for the delay, but I suspect it was, at least partially, due to a studio afraid of a potential bomb and using the 3D ticket premium to help front load it and guard against a low opening gross. Either way, I was already interested in seeing it. It looked better than the first and I am also in for the nostalgia reasons, I did love me some G.I. Joe when I was a kid.

Critical Capsule: A Good Day to Die Hard

Bruce Willis is back at the controls of John McClane and I am not s sure that is necessarily a good thing. As much as I will not begrudge the making of a film, there are times when franchises probably should not be revisited. The creative talent may have their hearts in the right place, but it is not always possible to recapture the magic of a previous film or films, especially when the series was started some 25-years before.

Movie Review: Looper

I am going to give you a name. The name I am to give you is one out must commit to memory. It is not exactly important to remember for the purpose of this review, it is more for the quality of movies that he makes. The name is Rian Johnson. You may not know it yet, but he is a man to keep an eye on. He has now made three films and all of them take familiar ideas and turns them into something extraordinary. First was Brick, the high school drama told like a noir film. Second was The Brothers Bloom, a twist on the con man tale. Now there is Looper, a fascinating take on the time travel story.

Movie Review: The Cold Light of Day (2012)

Some movies are meant to be seen on the big screen, but for whatever reason never make it there. There are also movies that seem to end up on the big screen by default when they have no right being there. I am sure sure that many of you can think of movies on both sides of the equation. In my experience this happens with horror a lot, think of movies like Creature and The Collector making the big screen while movies like Trick 'r Treat don't. I boggles the mind. The Mabrouck El Mechri directed thriller, The Cold Light of Day, probably shouldn't have seen said light of day.

Reviews in Retrograde: Armageddon

Critical Outcast isn't my first attempt at a website, I had a few stutter steps in the late 1990's and early 2000's. These attempts generated a whole bunch of poorly written, often very short and spoilerific reviews. I recently stumbled upon them in my archives and thought you may be interested in seeing some of these early attempts at writing. They are as they were then, I make no apologies for how bad or how short they are. Feel free to have at them with reckless abandon! I present to you: Reviews in Retrograde.
