Event Recap: Exhumed Films Presents - 3-Dementia!

If you know me, you know my love for genre films and the Hudson Horror Show. Even if you don’t know me, there is a good chance that you still know this about me. While Hudson Horror may be local genre marathon saviors they are hardly the only game around. There is a group based out of Philadelphia, PA, called Exhumed Films that has been in the game for twenty years, delivering all manner of genre movie marathons, all from 35mm prints. On July 16, 2017, the group put on what may be the most unique show they have ever had. The show was called 3-Dementia and, you guessed it, was comprised entirely of 3-D films. It also happened to be the first Philadelphia set show of theirs that I have attended.

Movie Review: Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

In 1980 a small movie called Friday the 13th hit theaters and proved to be a huge hit, scaring audiences across the nation. While there were slashers before it that set the stage, this was the one that exploited the violently horrific nature of horror and captured everyone's imagination. One year later, the terror returned, expanding on the franchise and introducing us to Mrs. Voorhees baby boy. This, too, proved to be a hit and a juggernaut was created. A third film was fast tracked and arrived in theaters in August of 1982, where it promptly became a box office hit. It also was the first, and so far only, Friday film to be shot in 3D.

Movie Review: Gravity

Alfonso Cuaron is a director I wish was a little more prolific. That could be a double edged sword. If he was more prolific, the resulting movies may not be nearly as good. In other words, I should just be grateful for what we get. His 2006 film, Children of Men, is simply phenomenal film making and one of my all time favorites. He was also the guy behind my favorite of the Harry Potter films, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Now, he has returned with a long in development special effects driven tale of humanity and survival. The movie is called simply Gravity.

Movie Review: Pacific Rim

When the year started, there were a few movies I was really looking forward to. These movies included Lords of Salem, Evil Dead, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and the upcoming Elysium. However, there was one movie I kept forgetting about and I do not know why. That movie was, of course, Pacific Rim. How this big robots versus monster movie kept escaping my memory, I will never know. Fortunately, the trailers and promos over the past month or so have made sure that my mind did not forget for long.

Movie Review: Dredd

Judge Dredd is a character I am only vaguely familiar with. He comic book shops I frequented back in the day never seemed to have any of the books. However, I was a character I had heard of and was definitely intrigued by. I am almost embarrassed to say most of knowledge came from the song that Anthrax song they wrote about him, "I Am the Law." Man, I love that song. There was also the 1995 movie with Sylvester Stallone which, while corny fun, is not a good representation of the hard nosed character. Now there is a new interpretation on town, Dredd.
