Critical Capsule: The Room (2003)

Have you ever heard of The Room? Before a few days ago I had no idea what it was. I have since learned it is generally considered one of the worst movies ever made. I am here to tell you that is a pretty accurate description. It is one of the worst things I have ever laid eyes on, although I would still watch it over Movie 43. It is a movie that completely fails on every level, even the title makes no sense. Still, it is a movie that needs to be seen, preferably with friends and an abundance of beer.

The movie centers on a successful banker who lives with his girlfriend, has friends who like to toss a football around, and is helping pay for the tuition and apartment of an orphan boy. The girlfriend decides he does not love him anymore and seduces his best friend, but continues to pretend to lover the boyfriend. That is about it, add ridiculous scene after ridiculous scene until he ultimately discovers her infidelity and becomes distraught.

That is all there is to it. There is nothing I can say or write that will do justice to just how terrible this movie is. The laughable dialogue, the weird characters, people who appear out of nowhere, the awful music, the drug dealer, the ridiculous scenes of sexuality, the cheap sets, it just goes on and on and on without end.

The one thing I will say in its defense is that it feels like something born out of tragedy, as if the writer/director/producer/etc. Had a girl break his heart and this was his response, his outlet, made for some sort of catharsis to process what had happened to him. Probably would have been better off suffering in silence.

Please, do yourself a favor and watch this movie, it is absolutely terrible.

Highly Recommended.
