Happy New Year from the New Movie and Box Office Prediction column! Are you tired of that opening? Me too, but this is the first weekend of new movies this year, so it is appropriate. Surprisingly, I am actually interested in all of this week's new films, a rarity for early January. Even with my interest, I suspect the top of the box will be dominated by holdovers from 2009, including James Cameron's juggernaut Avatar. Do not doubt this.
Daybreakers. (2009, 98 minutes, R, horror/science fiction) Time to kick those sparkly vampires to the curb. Daybreakers may not be a great movie, but at least it gives the vampires back a little of their dignity. I hope. In any case, the movie looks like fun. It is set in the future and a disease has turned most of the population into vampires. Now the world is reaching a critical juncture, people and their precious blood are running out. What is going to happen? A hematologist vamp (Ethan Hawke) teams up with fugitive humans who may have a cure for vampirism. The film was directed by Spierig Brothers, who also made the fun Undead.
Leap Year. (2009, 97 minutes, PG-13, romantic comedy) I would be lying if I said this movie looked good. Still, I kind of want to see it. You see, I am a fan of Amy Adams and would see this just for her. It is the story of a woman who, following a proposal-less anniversary, follows her boyfriend to Ireland where she plans to take advantage of a tradition. That tradition is that a woman can propose to her boyfriend on leap day. Unfortunately, complications ensue and she is on the wrong side of the island with an Irish fellow who may be the key to love.
Youth in Revolt. (2009, 90 minutes, R, comedy) Haven't quite figured this one out, but I do like Michael Cera and the trailer does look intriguing. A teen (Cera) is moved by her mother and her boyfriend to a trailer park. Here, he meets a girl who immediately captures his heart. In order to capture hers, he creates an alter ego. Hilarity ensues.
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. (2009, 122 minutes, PG-13, fantasy) I have been looking forward to this for quite awhile now. This features Heath Ledger's final performance, sadly he did pass prior to completing shooting. A couple rewrites later, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law step in to complete the film in his place. They costar with Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits for director Terry Gilliam. The story centers on Christopher Plummer as the leader of a sideshow who sold his daughter's soul to the devil. Now the devil wants to collect, Ledger is the man who tried to stop the collection. Really looking forward to this.

Box Office Predictions
Well, it has been a few weeks since I have tried my hand at predictions. Christmas crazies kept me away one week, while the second week featured New Year and no new movies. I am now back and taking a stab at the rankings, in an attempt to catch up with what has transpired since the lat time I tried this. I am going to take a big risk and predict that Avatar will take the top spot for a fourth straight weekend. The rest of the bunch will just be a toss up. Well, here we go, my first round of guesses back from the holiday break
