The second weekend of October is here and we do not have a horror film. That is sad. If there is one month that should be loaded with bloody fare, it is October. You know, this would have been a good weekend to open a little movie called Halloween II. I am just saying. There are only a couple of weeks left and there are only a couple of titles that are near the horror realm. Is everyone that afraid of Saw? I cannot wait for that series to run its path and disappear. That will hopefully make October a bit more interesting.
Couples Retreat. (2009, 107 minutes, PG-13, comedy) This movie looks like a lot of fun. It also looks like Judd Apatow-lite, it distinctly has that flavor to it, and that is not a bad thing. Not yet anyway. The movie centers on a couple who go on a retreat in the hopes of saving their marriage. They bring along a few of their friends due to a great group rate, what follows is comedy and a look inside issues that arise between couples. I am looking forward to this one. Couples Retreat also features the feature film debut of Peter Billingsley as a director, he is best known for playing Ralphie in A Christmas Story. The cast is filled with recognizable faces including: Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love.
Free Style. (2009, 94 minutes, PG, drama) Corbin Bleu stars in this coming of age tale of a young man determined to win a spot on a national motocross tour. I do not think this is going to make much of a dent. I have not seen any promotion for this anywhere, no trailers, commercials, posters. Do they want it to succeed? I am not sure. I did eventually find a trailer, it looks like a typical inspirational sort of tale for the family. Nothing special, nothing that makes me want to go and see it.
Good Hair. (2009, 95 minutes, PG-13, documentary) This documentary was inspired by a question that Chris Rock's young daughter asked him about hair. He set out to investigate the importance of hair in black culture. You know, the idea is an interesting one, although I am not sure it is one that I feel the need to go to theaters to see. Perhaps when it hits DVD I will check it out. However, I will be interested in the thoughts of any of you who go and see it this weekend.
St. Trinian's. (2009, 97 minutes, PG-13, comedy) This looks like a fun movie. It centers on a school whose primary doctrine invites personal expression. It is a school for girls where a motley crew of young women band together to save their school from bankruptcy. The cast includes Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, and Russell Brand. On top of that, I had not heard of the film prior to seeing it on the schedule for the local theater earlier this week. Something tells me the crowds will be light.
Paranormal Activity. (2009, 99 minutes, R, horror) This is said to be one of, if not the, scariest movie of the year. The low budget flick has done well and many have lobbied for a wide release. It appears to be working as the film is expanding this weekend. It is coming near my area, not exactly local but well within the range I am willing to drive. The movie concerns a young couple who have moved into a new home and believe things are happening. They set up cameras in hopes of catching evidence, however they are not prepared for what they find.

Box Office Predictions
The second weekend of October is a little thin, that should make it easier to predict where the movies are going to fall. Although, I doubt I will do any better than any other week, but that thought won't stop me from trying! My guesses will start with me going out on a limb and predict that Couples Retreat will come out on top.
