The Trailer Park: Trust the Man

David Duchovny returns to the big screen for the first time since the 2004 bomb, Connie and Carla. Hopefully, this will do a little bit better. This time he is joined by Billy Crudup, Julianne Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Eva Mendes in this tale of relationships.

Trust the Man looks like it could be an entertaining film about the dating and married lives of adults. It is certainly not going to break any new ground, but perhaps it will succeed at delivering good characters and an interesting arc for them to travel. To be honest, I am not seeing that in the trailer. It looks like it may be entertaining, but it just seems like it is going to be a film that treads water, toeing the line, and never really trying to move ahead.

The bright spots are Billy Crudup and Julianne Moore. Both of them are quality performers who almost always deliver characters worth watching, even in movies of sub par quality. Then there is Duchovny, who I loved in his star making role of Fox Mulder on The X-Files, but ever since then it seems like he is playing the same character in a different setting (even if I did enjoy Evolution and Playing God).

The movie was directed by Bart Freundlich, who also helmed Catch That Kid and The Myth of Fingerprints, working from his own script. Despite a mediocre trailer, I think it is a film that I may like.

The trailer is up at the Quicktime site, and cashing in on the blog phenomenon, there is a blog set up for Duchovny and Freundlich. It is being released by Focus Features in limited release on August 18, 2006, and will go wide on September 1st. Trust the Man is rated R and is 103 minutes long.
