Still, I am truly shocked that the Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston team up would bring in nearly $40 million right out of the box. I saw the movie, and it actually was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised to find a film that did not conform to the conventions of the rom-com. Granted, I do not think it was entirely successful, but it was a step in the right direction.
X-Men: The Last Stand was the only film to suffer a truly large dropoff from last week, descending over 66%. I guess that was to be expected after its absolutely monstrous debut over Memorial Day. It will be interesting to see how it holds up for the rest of its run, as the competition is not going to get easier. I do think the film was entertaining, if somewhat of a disappointment over the first two outings.
Of the returning films, three of them all had very similar audience drops from last week of in between 23 and 24%. Those three are Over the Hedge which remained strong at number 3, RV at 7, and See No Evil at 8. That last one is surpassing all expectations for it, and while it is rather weak in the originality part, I enjoyed the heck out of it.
The most surprising entry in the top ten was Al Gore and An Inconvenient Truth. No way did I think a movie featuring the former Vice-President talking about global warming would crack the top ten, even with the good reviews the film has gotten.
Two films were edged out this week. Those slipping films were Ice Age: The Meltdown (11) and United 93 (12).
My predictions were mostly wrong, but also mostly close. I had 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 flipped, while I got 5-7 correct, only to completely miss the bottom trio. Perhaps I will do better next week, and maybe I will take a stab at guessing each films gross.
