Opening March 3rd is a documentary on a party thrown by comedian Dave Chappelle in Brooklyn. It may not be a hard hitting expose, ala Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, but it looks to be infinitely more fun.The trailer shows Dave approaching normal, non-celebrity people and inviting them to his big party. Many of the some of the folks act like they have just won the lottery, while others invite Dave to their homes. The trailer also shows some of the party itself, and some of the celebrities that took part in it. The film chronicles Dave's efforts to pur this together, inviting the guests, and cracking jokes at a moment's notice. The trailer hints at the freestyle, off-the cuff comedy that Chappelle has mastered over the years.
The film looks like it could be a blast. Watching as Chappelle makes a quick stop in these peoples lives, with likely effects that will last a lifetime. Chappelle brings these people to Brooklyn and faces them with performances by artists such as The Roots, Mos Def, Kanye West, Jill Scott, and the reunited Fugees, who have not performed together since 1997.
The documentary was directed by Michel Gondry. This is his followup to one of my favorite films of this millennium, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It stands as one the most original works to grace the big screen in recent years. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the films visual style. Combining a cutting edge filmmaker with a cutting edge comedian could result in brilliance.I can't see this getting a terribly wide release, but I do hope on getting a chance to see this, as it looks like it would be a good time.
