Doom. Inspired by the first classic first person shooter, spawner of countless ripoffs, and a fine example of the "killer app" that a video game platform desires. The big question is whether or not it is successful at adapting the games story and game play to satisfy the gamers, yet contain broad enough appeal to bring in the non-gamers. From the trailers it looks like it is going to be fun, down to the inclusion of the first person perspective. It stars The Rock, who I really like as an action star, and was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, who also made Romeo Must Die and Cradle 2 the Grave.
Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. The "Inspired by" tag has jumped to the title of this feel good Disney entry. I have to admit, it looks pretty good. It is about a horse who breaks his leg, but is given a second chance. Dakota Fanning stars as the young girl who believes in the horse. She costars with Kurt Russell. This may be worth the theatrical trip.
North Country. Here is an Oscar hopeful. I have read many who believe that Charlize Theron has a shot at the big award again. It is the story of a woman working in a mine and having to endure all kinds of abuse. As a result, she brings a class action lawsuit against the mining company for sexual harassment. This is a fictional tale based on the actual 1984 case. It was directed by Niki Caro, who also made the wonderful Whale Rider.
Stay. This likes one twisted mind freak of a movie. Whether or not it is successful in that attempt remains to be seen. It stars Ewan McGregor as a psychiatrist who is attempting to prevent the suicide of one of his students, who has made some disturbing predictions. More disturbing is that they are coming true. Naomi Watts and Ryan Gosling costar in this one, it was directed by Monster Ball's Marc Foster.
The Gospel. This tells the tale of an R&B star who returns home due to a tragedy to his family's church. Now he has to deal with his reasons for leaving, not to mention a childhood rival who is now attempting to gain control of the congregation. The story does not seem terribly original, I think I'll pass.
Kids in America. I read the description of this, and it looks rather dumb. It tells of a high school with a repressive principal. Students are expelled for exhibiting free speech and expression in a variety of areas. Just reading the description started to induce the gag reflex. It just read like an amateur film that was trying to cram too much in and beat you over the head with it's "message." I'll pass.
Everything is Illuminated. This is opening at the local arthouse. I have been looking forward to seeing this ever since I first saw the trailer. It is based on a novel about a quirky young man, played by Elijah Wood, who collects things. He goes on a journey to learn about his family's history, this is his story. It was directed by actor Liev Schreiber.
