New Releases for 10/22/04

This weekend sees two big releases, one limited release going wider, and a documentary playing for only two days near me. Let's start with the big releases:

The Grudge. I'm looking forward to this one. It is another remake of a Japanese film, Ju-On: The Grudge, but this one is a little different. This time it's being directed by the director of the original, Takashi Shimizu. Hopefully this will help the translation. I have not seen the original, but I have heard very good things about. I am looking forward to this hopefully creepy film. It marks Sarah Michelle Gellar's first leading film role, this could be the test for her continued success on the big screen.

Surviving Christmas. Now it's not even the end of October and already we're getting Christmas themed films. It's a bit early if you ask me, of course the commercials don't look so good, so maybe they're hoping to catch those early Christmas fans and make a bit of money before disappearing. It stars Ben Affleck as a rich guy trying to regain the family like atmosphere at Christmas, he does this by buying a family for the season. The head of the family is James Gandolfini, of Soprano's fame, and also features the family's daughter played by Christina Applegate. I am not impressed by what I have seen so far.

Next we have the expanding indie:

I Heart Huckabees. I've heard both ends of the spectrum on this one. I am interested in seeing it, but I get the idea it may just be weird for the sake of being weird without having any substance behind it. I still can't tell you what this movie is about. It has a lot of stars in it, but that may just be covering the shallowness. I guess we'll see. It features Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Lily Tomlin, and Dustin Hoffman, and it is written and directed by David O. Russell who last made Three Kings.

Lastly we have the documentary.

Call It Democracy (formerly Everywhere But Florida). This one is a documentary about the 2000 voting fiasco. Don't really know anything other than that, but the topic is ripe for an interesting tale. It's only showing for 2 days, with one show on each day, so I am sure that it will be a hot ticket, especially Saturday when one of the producers will be speaking at the screening.
