Music Review: Nitro - O.F.R.

Nitro's O.F.R. Has to be one of the craziest metal release I heard in the late 80's. Granted, most of the stuff I was listening to at the time was hair metal, I had yet to really make the jump to truly heavy stuff. Anyway, there is something about this album that I really like. There was a time when I would sit and listen in awe to this. It really jus blew me away. These days I recognize it more for what it is rather than what I nought it was twenty some odd years ago. I still like it and certainly get a kick out of it, but the perspective is different.

Movie Review: Bernie

Bernie is a curiosity of a movie. It is a quiet, sedate one that tells an unbelievable but true story. It left me intrigued by the situation but without many real strong feelings about it. The screenplay was co-written by Skip Hollandsworth based on an article that he wrote about the 1996 murder of an 81-year old woman by her much younger companion. The movie doesn't really do too deeply, instead it looks at it from a distance presenting many of the facts of the case. It is more interested in presenting the odd case than it is with making judgments.

Movie Review: Chernobyl Diaries

Co-writer and producer Oren Peli is making a career out of scaring you while never really showing you anything, having brought us the Paranormal Activity franchise and now Chernobyl Diaries. Much like his prior creation, this one, directed by Brad Parker, seems to do everything it can to keep from really showing you anything related to the real threat. In a way it is a bit of a cheat, a way t avoid showing the blood and guts that many of us horror fans clamor for. Still, there is something to be said about the creatures that lurk in the dark waiting to grab us at unsuspecting moments, not knowing what is lurking. There is that and the fact that it isn't ghosts this time out.

Movie Review: Men in Black 3

Did I like the first Men in Black? Yes, that was a fun and clever movie. How about the 2002 sequel? No, I did not like that one. I could not tell you any details as I have pretty much erased it from my mind, unlike the original, which has just faded with the passing of time. It has been some time since I have seen either of them. Now, fifteen years since the first one arrived on the big screen we are faced with a sequel I am fairly certain no one asked for. I suspect director Barry Sonnenfeld was looking to prove he could still make movies after the awful RV. Even though I was really not expecting much from it, I ventured into the dark theater with nothing but hopes for a good time.

Movie Review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

On the surface The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is not a movie that would target an individual such as myself. There are no explosions, gunfights, car chases, or crazed ax murderers. This is a movie that features a number of elderly people talking for the better part of two-hours. Now, why on earth would I subject myself to such a movie? The answer is fairly simple, I wanted to and it provided a change of pace to my usual stream of horror and other genre material. What I found in this movie is an incredibly sweet and touching trifle that may not flesh all the characters out as much as they need, but there is enough here to hang onto and just enjoy.

Movie Review: Battleship

When I first heard they were making a movie based on Battleship, I could do nothing but chuckle. Of course, I had the same reaction when Disney decided to make a movie based on an amusement park attraction and that turned out to be the surprisingly awesome Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. With that in mind there was a slim hope this would be a good movie. Well, don't hold your breath. Battleship is not a good movie. Perhaps, when they choose to make them, Hungry Hungry Hippos and Connect 4 will be better. Still, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Blu-ray Review: The Grey

It has been pretty interesting to watch Liam Neeson reinvent himself as a bad ass action star over the past few years. Just look at movies like Taken, Unknown, Clash of the Titans, Batman Begins, The A-Team, the Star Wars prequels, and now The Grey. Now, these are not strictly action films, but there is a certain level of tough guy attitude required for them. With The Grey, Neeson gets to stretch beyond pure action hero and journey into some interesting emotional depths in this reunion with his A-Team director Joe Carnahan. This is a movie that sees old school Neeson pair up with modern day action Neeson to create a character of interest and depth.

Movie Review: Dark Shadows (2012)

I am not ashamed to admit to being a Tim Burton fan. The man has a incredible visual style and his films always tend to stand out from the crowd. At the same time, I am not so blind as to ignore the fact his recent output has been less than stellar. He may enjoy what he is doing but the end result has generally been rather underwhelming. I really hope he has some plan to get ack to some truly original inspiring work. With Dark Shadows we have material that seems to be right up his alley, too bad the execution is middling at best, right in line with his other recent films.

Blu-ray Review: Underworld - Awakening

Nearly ten years ago the first Underworld arrived in theaters and introduced us to a new goth-flavored look at war between vampires and werewolves or lycans. Over the course of the series we have learned the war has been going on for centuries without humanity ever knowing. We also learn the story of the first vampire/lycan hybrid, a conspiracy between the races and how our hero, Selene, became a target of pretty much everyone. A prequel film provided insight to the start of the war by taking us back to the beginning. Now, with the fourth film we get a story that simultaneously furthers the war and also feels a bit like a reboot, or at least a new beginning.

Blu-ray Review: The Vow

The fact that I saw The Vow on the big screen led many of  my friends to wonder why. Upon hearing that I liked he movie led them to an even more incredulous "Why?" It seems that there are people out there who buy into the idea of the "chick flick" and the "guy flick" (with some of my friends being among that number), I am not one of those people. Sure, I have used these terms as a shortcut when describing a movie quickly, we all understand what they mean. So, we are back to me enjoying a "chick flick." Whatever you want to think, there is nothing wrong with enjoying romantic movies, it is just hard to find a good one.

Blu-ray Review: Shock Labyrinth 3D

It is not often that I have trouble getting through a movie. With Shock Labyrinth it took me four attempts to make it all the way through. It is not because it is shocking, oh no. I had trouble watching this entire movie because it is so utterly and completely boring. Seriously, this is a good cure for insomnia. I wish I could report differently, I mean, it was only ten years ago that writer/director Takashi Shimizu joined the likes of Hideo Nakata (Ringu) as a top flight voice on the Japanese horror scene with the Ju-on films. Shock Labyrinth finds the creator shuffling with a tale that feels less than fresh and needlessly convoluted.

CritCast #17: Avengers and Superheroes

Movie Review: Marvel's The Avengers

Here is the moment we have all been waiting for. Ever since Marvel got into the business of producing their own films and with the surprisingly great success that was Iron Man, this is the movie they have been building towards. The universe has had its groundwork laid down with the two Iron Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. It is here and it is good. Seriously, this is how you make a big overblown superhero action epic and make it work.
