New Movies and Box Office Predictions: The Eye, Over Her Dead Body, Strange Wilderness

February kicks off the same way that January did, with a Japanese remake. I wonder if that has happened before? With so many of these things being produced I would not be surprised. Overall, the new slate seems to be pretty weak. I cannot picture any of the new wide releases going on to be a smash hit, more likely they were put here, in this weak slot, in an attempt to grab some bucks. Maybe I will be surprised and one or two will actually turn out to be a good film, but I am not holding my breath. The movie on the move this weekend, and one well worth spending time with, is There Will Be Blood. The Daniel Day-Lewis starring drama finally goes into full blown wide release. Hopefully you will be able to find it locally, if you do, do not hesitate in seeing one of the best films of 2007.

The Eye. (2008, 98 minutes, PG-13, horror, trailer) Hot on the heels if One Missed Call comes yet another Japanese Import. This time it involves ocular transplant. You know, the eye. In this case Jessica Alba plays a young woman who has an eye transplant and then starts seeing strange things. As it turns out, her eyes once belonged to a killer. Will she be able to survive? I have to say the trailers look pretty creepy. It will be interesting to see if Jessica Alba will be able to carry the film on her own. The film is co-directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, who were behind the thriller Them (not the Wes Craven presented film), which has yet to receive US distribution.

Over Her Dead Body. (2008, 95 minutes, PG-13, comedy, trailer) Japanese remakes not for you? How about the second of three romantic comedies to arrive in early 2008? First was Katherine Heigl's 27 Dresses and later comes Patrick Dempsey in Made of Honor. Right now we are faced with Eva Longoria as a lovelorn ghost in Over Her Dead Body. I'm not sure that I particularly care for the concept: Longoria dies on her wedding day, Paul Rudd (her would be husband) visits a psychic and the two fall for each other while she haunts the psychic, trying to break them up. Doesn't sound like much fun to me.

Strange Wilderness. (2008, 87 minutes, R, comedy, trailer) Remember how I railed against Meet the Spartans last week? Well, this looks to be just as bad, but I find myself thinking about possibly seeing it. Fortunately, I doubt this has the power to climb to the top, and may even have trouble cracking the top ten. The advertising for this seems to be near non-existent, I mean I hadn't even heard of it until literally days ago. It is a Happy Madison production, which should give you an idea of what to expect. The story concerns a wildlife show whose ratings are plummeting, making the cast and crew look for a way to grab ratings. The cast includes such recognizable faces as Steve Zahn, Justin Long, Kevin Heffernan, Robert Patrick, Ashley Scott, Jonah Hill, Harry Hamlin, Joe Don Baker, and Ernest Borgnine. It is directed and co-written by Fred Wolf who last directed 2004's sophomoric comedy Without a Paddle.

Also opening this week, but not near me:

  • Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour
  • Caramel

Box Office Predictions
Would you believe me if I told you that the Hannah Montana concert flick will be in the top ten this week? Would it surprise you to read that it is going to be the surprise hit of the weekend? It will not likely reach the top spot, but it will finish strongly and probably be in the top five. How can this be? Well, there are reports of it breaking pre-sale records, and it is tracking well among the pros, so who am I to argue? As for who will win, I am betting that Jessica Alba's The Eye will climb to the top for a brief one week stay while Eva Longoria's new comedy will likely have a decent open as well. Overall, box office will likely sag with the Super Bowl on Sunday, which will help keep a large percentage of the male audience away.

Here is how I think the top ten field will play out:

RankTitleBox Office
1The Eye$14.5 million
2Rambo$11 million
3Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus$1o million
427 Dresses$8.5 million
5Juno$8 million
6Over Her Dead Body$7.5 million
7There Will Be Blood$7 million
8Meet the Spartans$7 million
9Untraceable$5 million
10Cloverfield$4 million
