Pick of the Week.

This week's pick is a great movie, that like many films from Asia, is being remade in America. That remake is also rumored to involve Martin Scorsese and Brad Pitt, the potential is there for a good remake. But enough about the rumors. What is this movie you ask? Infernal Affairs.

I imported a copy of this many months ago, I just had to see if it was as good as I was hearing it was. After I popped it in and watched it through, I saw for myself just how great it was. The film stars Andy Lau, who is also in the recently opened House of Flying Daggers, and Tony Leung, who was in Hero earlier this year, as agents on the opposite sides of the law. The film is about an agent of the triads who is undercover as a police officer, and a police officer who is undercover in the triads. I really don't want to say anything else for fear of giving something away. Let's just say that it is an incredibly well acted/written/directed film that is worthy of your time.

The only thing that I can see wrong with this release, at least until I can see it, is the cover art, it is horrible to say the least. This ugly red color with background images of Lau's and Leung's faces with some random Asian model with a gun in the middle. She is not even in the movie and there is no character even reminiscent of that woman. It is just a horrible job. Just please do not let the bad cover deter you from seeing this incredible movie.

Other titles to check out this week.
  • The Ultimate Matrix Box set. A 10 disk boxset covering all aspects of the films. It features new transfers and new extras.
  • The Bourne Supremacy. An excellent sequel which doesn't rely on special effects. This is a first rate action/thriller.
  • Dodgeball. A very funny comedy from Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn.
  • Maria Full of Grace. A very good film about a young woman trying to escape to a better life using drug trafficking as an exit. Very good.
  • The Buster Keaton Collection. Classic silent films, classic silent star.
  • Crusade: The Complete Series. The short lived Babylon 5 spin off.
  • Wild at Heart: Special Edition. David Lynch strikes again.
  • Warriors of Heaven and Earth. I have not seen this, but it looks very good.
  • Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Black and White Vol 2. I think the title says it all.
  • Walt Disney Treasures: The Complete Pluto Vol. 1. Ditto.
  • The Flintstones: Season 2. Yabba Dabba Do! The series marches on.
  • Gargoyles: Season 1. I remember enjoying this many years ago, I wonder how well it holds up?
  • M: The Criterion Collection. Criterion has remastered their original release.
  • Species III. I haven't seen this but I can only imagine that it is completely unnecessary.
