New Releases for 11/19/04

Let's take a look a what we get to spend our pre-holiday weekend viewing.

Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie. It may be for kids, but I must admit, this looks pretty funny. I've only seen bits and pieces of a few episodes, but I've laughed at what I've seen. I may just have to break down and see this one.

National Treasure. Nicolas Cage's latest actioner looks like it could be fun. It's produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who always puts a fun stamp on the generally ridiculous films he produces, occasionally puts out a quality film like Pirates of the Caribbean. This one involves the search for a treasure hidden by this countries founding fathers, and the key is a map hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence. The story doesn't look like it will be all that great, but the adventure factor is going to be the big draw. Plus it has Sean Bean in support, I've always enjoyed his work.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. I enjoyed the first film, a nice romantic comedy with a likable cast. Now we get a sequel which has had mixed notices. Most of what I have seen has not been kind, although Roger Ebert liked it. I don't think the trailers looked all that impressive, a couple of funny moments, but the comedy looks forced. On top of that, there is something about Renee Zellweger's phony voice that just drives me up a wall, it sounds terrible. Anyway, it may be fun, but I it isn't at the top of my list.

Tarnation. I saw a review of this on Ebert & Roeper a few weeks back, it looked interesting. It is a documentary chronicling the director's childhood, as well as his mother's issues. The film utilizes home video, tape recordings, memories, a variety of methods with which to get it's information across. From what I understand, it is more of a triumph of editing. Creative to say the least.

View from the Top. Not sure what to make of this. This showed up on the listings for a couple of theaters near me as opening today. The link brought me the details, and as I suspected, this is a film from last year starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Not sure why it is shown as coming to theaters again. I am guessing this is some sort of mistake.
