Critical Capsule: Justice League

Justice league, what else is left to be said? Probably nothing. I did enjoy the film, but I did not love. I felt that Steppenwolf was a weak villain and the plot felt like a mash of Avengers and Lord of the Rings. A lot of the comedic moments fell flat, especially when they were centered on Batman; however, Flash was pretty fantastic. I thought most of the heroes were handled well, Wonder Woman continues to shine and Cyborg was a lot better than I was expecting. I would :d[ watch this one again and feel it currently is the second best of the DCEU, behind Wonder Woman. I do feel this universe has been rushed but there is always time to save, unlike Universal’s Dark Universe debacle.

Movie Review: Batman v Superman - Dawn of Justice

I sit here contemplating if I should bother writing about this movie. There is both good and bad to the movie, but no real effect to be done by my words. Besides, I have seen what it has turned my Facebook feed into. It is at a level of disharmony that I thought was reserved for political discussion, which I generally try to avoid (generally). On top of that, there has already been so much written about the film that anything I saw would disappear into the echo chamber (pretty much like everything else I write). Not to mention the cyclical, few times a year, backlash against critics, including a crazy claim of writers being paid off for bad reviews. Ridiculous.

Movie Review: Phantoms (1998)

After watching the latest film from David Fincher, the fantastic Gone Girl, I decided to step into Ben Affleck's past and revisit one of his horror entries. That movie is none other than Phantoms, a favorite whipping boy of the horror elite. At this stage of the game, it has largely been forgotten, or, at most, relegated to the infamous bit in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, when the duo meet Ben Affleck (playing himself) and saying "You the bomb in Phantoms, yo!". To be honest, I was really rather curious to see if it remained as terrible as I remembered it, or if time had been kind enough to let it be revealed as something more, something worthy of our time rather than a perpetual Affleck career speed bump.

Movie Review: Gone Girl

Wow. What else can I say? David Fincher is a masterful director. Sure, his movies may not all be perfect, but the guy is an amazing talent and nowhere is it on display better than in Gone Girl. With this movie the audience is played like a harp from hell. I had no idea just how far this movie would go. Simply put, the trailers do not even hint at what goes on in this movie. What they do is give a great set up and an interesting hook. Hell, while that hook may have been interesting, I was still unconvinced this would be good, or be able to justify its lengthy run time. Belive me, it did justify it.

Reviews in Retrograde: Armageddon

Critical Outcast isn't my first attempt at a website, I had a few stutter steps in the late 1990's and early 2000's. These attempts generated a whole bunch of poorly written, often very short and spoilerific reviews. I recently stumbled upon them in my archives and thought you may be interested in seeing some of these early attempts at writing. They are as they were then, I make no apologies for how bad or how short they are. Feel free to have at them with reckless abandon! I present to you: Reviews in Retrograde.
