Movie Review: House with 100 Eyes

Found footage. The horror style du jour that has finally been losing some steam in recent years. It is not that it is a bad tool to use, it is just that you need to apply some sort of creativity to it. Just look at the recent movie The Gallows, that was a bad implementation of the found footage idea. Now, look at House with 100 Eyes, it is not exactly a good movie, but it makes good use of the found footage style. That should also tell you if you are interested in this, some people just don't like this style of film making. That's not a bad thing, just a choice.

Movie Review: Splinter (2008)

There was this movie I wanted to see a few years back, but never did. I remember seeing trailers for it in theaters, but it never came. Not around my neck of the woods, anyway. Over time I forgot about it and the desire to see it all but disappeared, since I did not remember anything about it. Well, it turns out the movie was Splinter and my chance and desire to see it returned as I found it streaming on a new horror movie service. So, I clicked on the play button and watched this little horror movie, and guess what? I liked it! No, it is nothing particularly revolutionary, but it is quite entertaining and nicely executed.

Coming to Netflix - January 2015

As Netflix commits a culling of the queue, it does give back with a slew of new offerings during the next month. Here is a list of ten movies coming over the next few weeks that may be worth spending some time with. While I am always sad to lose good stuff from my queue, they always do a pretty good job of bringing some more stuff in that I can waste some hours with. I figured since I am going to do it, perhaps I should share some of these titles with you so that others can do the same. With that said, there are some pretty good movies on the service to check out.

Disappearing from Netflix come New Year's Day 2015

As we all know, Netflix cycles through movies on a regular basis. It seems that the big dumps of titles happen at the beginning of each month. It sucks, but it is a fact of life. I am sure it is not something Netflix wants to do, but it is the nature of the game and the contracts that get signed. I would love if everything was available in one place. Anyway, I thought I would highlight a few expiring titles that you may want to watch before they disappear, that is if you have time this holiday weekend. Yes, there are more than these, so check your queues for expiration dates!

Netflix'ns: The Ramen Girl

Netflix'ns is a series of review shorts of films, new and old, seen on Netflix, be it DVD or streaming. For better or worse, I sat through these films and have lived to tell the tale. These are not so much reviews as just comments on the film watched. Some will be first time views, others will be revisits. This is a work in progress.

Movie Review: Carriers (2009)

Each year there are always a few movies, usually horror movies, that get caught up in the system with a studio that doesn't know what to do with it. Movies that I hear about and have generally positive buzz but no release in sight. Of late two of those number are The Poughkeepsie Tapes and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. A while back Carriers was on that list, although it seemed to hit the home video market. It is one of those movies I was hoping to see on the big screen, but it was not to be.

Movie Review: Demonic Toys

Following the success of Child's Play in 1988, not to mention its sequels, there were a number of imitators, those who wanted to get their own killer dolls out there. Movies like Dolly Dearest were among the imitators, it is also a good example of how not to jump on the bandwagon. Then there is Full Moon pictures who have made a career out of puppet and toy based terrors. They have turned out so any over the years that it is easy to lose track. The most famous would have to be Puppet Master and its sequels, not to be forgotten is their other preeminent tale of cinematic killer toys, Demonic Toys.

Movie Review: Dolly Dearest

Unleashed in 1992, Dolly Dearest is a Child's Play knock off that has none of the wit, scares, or fun that any of the three Chucky movies had provided at that point in time. Dolly Dearest is a dull, frightless feature that challenges nothing but your desire to sleep. So far as the killer doll subset of horror films go, this is definitely one that is worth skipping.

Movie Review: Dolls (1987)

Following a pair of classic horror films in Re-Animator and The Beyond director Stuart Gordon has turned his eyes on a slightly less bloody project. Dolls sidetracks us into a child's flight of fancy before turning to a tongue in cheek horror of elegant construction in which dolls prove to be the undoing of those who have outgrown childish things.

Movie Review: Child's Play 2

I have to say that the first Child's Play movie is a wonderful horror movie. It is  movie that dances along a campy line yet retains an effectively scary and atmospheric edge. Yes, that's right, the horror movie about a killer doll is actually scary. The movie was a success and with the open door at the end of the movie, the door was also left open for a sequel. It only took two years for Chucky to get back to the big screen and like so many horror sequels (well, sequels in general), they went bigger and broader than the original.

Movie Review: Child's Play

Once you get past the big three of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers, the second row of big guns like Leatherface and Pinhead, but before you get to the likes of the Leprechaun and Critters you will find one of cinema's top slashers. Yes, that is a list to go down and I am sure there are some that I missed, but bear with me. Right in the middle is Chucky, the one and only Charles Lee Ray. Any discussion of killer dolls has to include this little guy.
