Movie Review: Ant-Man

Tell me, and be honest, are you getting a little sick of superhero movies? I feel like I am on the cusp of falling into the abyss of writing them off. I do not think I will ever actually go over, but there is always that possibility. I feel like they (Marvel, mostly) map out their universe too far in advance and while the movies may entertain, they are starting to hit a level of diminishing returns for me. The map sucks some of the drama and danger many of the characters are in. Sure, we may know the hero isn't going to die, but knowing the actors are under contract for X more movies sort of hurts it. Enter Ant-Man.

Critical Capsule: Anchorman 2 - The Legend Continues

I think there has to be a time limit on when sequels can be made. Times change, people change, and it can be near impossible to recapture the magic that is trapped in the past. Case in point, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. The original 2004 film was a blast of manic, non sequitur comedy, this sequel feels like warmed over leftovers, even more so than the Wake Up, Ron Burgundy DVD movie that was made of all the clipped bits from the movie proper. This is not to say I didn't laugh, I did, but the movie probably could have been better and shorter, if it was really needed in the first place.

Critical Capsule: This is 40

I am a fan of Judd Apatow, he makes funny films that have a certain level of intelligence to them. It seems like the vast majority of films that he makes, and a number that come from his relative stable, are funny, real, and touch on actual humanity. He takes real world possibility, injects a dose of absurdist, yet still makes the final movie relatable and laugh out loud funny. They tend to touch on real world issues, deal with them in a serious fashion while making you laugh the whole time.
